To slugging teammate Darick Hall! And with the non-bouncy ball. Moniak has had a really, really nice season. More walks, lots more power, reportedly improved defense, good speed on the bases (leads the EL in triples almost double the second-place hitter), and no "Reading boost" with equal home/road OPS. At 21 in AA.

For me he's back in the conversation for the bottom of the "Top 100" lists.

It creates an interesting "problem". Haseley is basically succeeding in MLB, much to almost everyone's surprise. With Moniak in the pipeline for 2021 it begs the question what to do with both of them. Honestly I dont hate the idea of moving Harper to LF and letting them take CF and RF, but maybe the smart move is to trade one of them in the offseason prior to 2021 for a starting pitcher or whatever our need is by then (SS?, C?).

Moving Harper to LF is almost a waste with his arm, but having one of Haseley or Moniak in LF is also somewhat of a waste and they are better defensive OFs than normally needed (wanted) in that position. I know it sounds crazy, but I wonder if one of them can be taught to play 2B.

Why would you want to do that? Scott Kingery will be manning 2B. Bohm will be at 3B.

Given Harper, the question will be whether both Haseley and Moniak are productive enough at the plate to justify not putting some big masher in LF. If they are, then being "over-qualified" defensively shouldn't be seen as a negative! If they're not - if one or both of them appear to have enough offense to justify starting in CF (given defensive needs), but not enough to justify not playing somebody like Jay Bruce in LF, then one of 'em should be traded for something of need.

Because (at the moment) Kingery is more valuable than just having a position in my opinion. He is the backup literally at every position but catcher, he could start 162 games just in that position. (I count him as the backup at 1B because he could fill in for someone like Harper who would move to 1B). I know that is kinda tough on him, but that is immensely valuable to have a ML player that can fill in for your first injury / day off and not have to go to a lesser backup/bench player

I would keep that true for next year also if I could.

I'm not really sure it's that much of a surprise...I think when haseley was drafted he had a pretty high floor and a lower than usual ceiling.

Haseley could be a 275/20 hr/80 RBI regular. Maybe even a little better than that.

I expected Haseley to be a 750-800 OPS bat so agree am not surprised by his performance. Hard to know if there is more power there but it is possible. Early fielding stats (very, very small sample of course) have him as above average in LF and below average in CF which is also what we expected. He does seem to get good jumps on the ball but only has average speed. Of course this is what Herrera is as a CF too.

I think we can live with Haseley in CF. If we continue on the path of 3-outcome baseball then there are simply fewer fly balls to catch and Haseley is just fine out there especially with Quinn as a backup to play against some LHP and maybe in big parks where Quinn's range is needed.

Given that he was a high floor player I am not surprised that Haseley is playing fairly well. The BB rate is low so I imagine he'll have to make adjustments as the league gets a book on him. He can probably handle that though a few slumps should be expected (and ignored as they will happen to any young player). Haseley is not a star, but certainly fits in a major league outfield.

If Haseley continues to play well, should we consider, promoting Moniak now to AAA and trading Haseley in the off season while his value is high for a starting pitcher? Position of excess traded for position of need. This is assuming we believe Moniak’s ceiling is higher. Otherwise Moniak is also high value , too.

Not sure we are in the position of strength yet though. Moniak probably needs most of next year in AAA and we still are not certain about who is a long term CF. Cutch is only signed for 2 more years also, so at most you would have a year of playing those 3 in 2 spots (absent further injuries). Moniak could assume Bruce's roster spot in 2021.

This does not mean we should close the door on trading one of Haseley or Moniak if the time is right. You are right that Haseley has more value because he is in the majors already. We would just need a deal for the right piece to fit our roster (like a young starter with several years of control). Trading Haseley would mean adding a CF also if Herrera is not back.

No, no. no, please don't fall for the trap that the Phils should immediately deal a young, skilled home grown guy simply because they have similar skills. For once, can we get to the point where we realize that in today's game a pitcher is a pitcher is a pitcher. Heck we could go into September trying to make the playoffs with a rotation that includes Smyly, Vargas and Straily [he did not sign with the Phils to pitch in LHV, no way.]

Unless you are bringing in a Greinke or Corbin, there really is little difference between a Vargas and an Eflin, a Smyly and a Velasquez or a Straily and a guy the Phils would likely get for either Haseley or MM. Let them play, let them grow and then see what happens.

Frankly, I am very much pro keeping the prospects and seeing how they progress with the organization. And I am still a big believer that with todays game and its leanings you simply do NOT trade hitters for pitchers unless you are getting back a Greinke or the like.

Besides, as poor as the pitching has been this year, if this team doesn't make the playoffs [and I don't think they will even finish .500] it will fall on the heads of the offense and not the starting pitching. With an offense that we had a right to expect this year both Smyly and Vargas could have won their recent starts. Given the way balls are flying out of the ballpark like cicadas flying out of their hiding places after 17 years in captivity, this Phillie offense has been an unmitigated disaster.

Keep Haseley and MM till we know what we have and can negotiate from a position of strength. Right now that is certainly not the case.
