Nice outing from Dylan Castaneda who has kind of flown under the radar but was a HS pitcher drafted in the 30th round this year from the Salisbury School (prep school where we got Anthony Hewitt). I think he was from NY City initially so wondering if our Long Island area scout was part of the group that signed him.

Hopefully PhuturePhillies has some notes on his stuff.

The reduced GO/AO appears to be true of just about everyone in Reading except Darick Hall (to the appoint that broadcasters from opposing teams have even noticed). There is some mystical adjustment between improving your GO/AO and maintaining a batting average over .280 that eludes this organization.

Do you mean dropped to .85? As I understand the stat his ground outs to fly out ratio in the past was over one, meaning more than one ground out to every fly out. This year it’s.85 which means he has less ground outs than fly outs. Or am I misunderstanding the stat?

I think nycphils used "jumped" because he's arguing that the lower GO/AO figure is better. "Improved" would probably express the same thought without the confusing linkage of "jumped" and "lower is better."

I think when an organization changes it's instructional staff and approach as much as the Phillies have the last few years, it's bound to take a while for everything to fall into place. I find it strangely encouraging that the Reading hitters have reduced their ground ball rate so much in one year. It will take time for the hitters to fully adjust to and maximize their success with the new approach. We'll have to wait and see how well they do next season. I want the Phillies to teach the most successful approaches for the modern game, but consistency of instruction is important. I hope we are now teaching the best approach.
