Very nice start for De Los Santos. His FB was 92-95 through first 4 then slower, although he popped a single 95 in the 7th inning when very tired. I wouldn't have let him go 101 pitches. His off-speed pitches were very effective.

Decent start off the DL for Jose Tavares 5.1 shutout innings (though walked 4) against a lineup featuring Bo Bichette, Vladito and Cavan Biggio.

Same for Medina - 5 IP, 3 hits, 1 BB, 5K and only 1 ER.

A lot of good things tonight, most of all the starting pitching including a sparkling start for De Los Santos, solid 1st rehab for Taveras, good bounce-back effort from Medina.

Though still room for improvement, Haseley continuing to show signs (3 hits so far in DH).

Haseley 4/5 in the nightcap after a hit in game 1. 2B and HR in the second game. Connor Seabold with a solid start. CLW sweeps St. Lucie--maybe they'll get some momentum going in the right direction.

Moniak is a significant setback for the whole organization. A Number 1-1 failing like this is very bad. The best draft slot we have had or will have in years and it is thrown away on him.

Sort of takes the shine off of Gillick given he personally scouted him. Almaraz, too.

I can see how we missed this given all the other scouting reports. They were comparing him to Christian Yelich and Jacoby Elsbury. Reminds me of Billy Beane's disdain for scouting HS players...

Is this a player-development issue?

Looking at the top 6 or 7 picks, other than Riley Pint with the Rockies, they are all doing fine - even the guy the Marlins picked who had TJ threw 15 good innings before it happened and should be back soon. It isn’t a case where it was a terrible draft and unless they picked Senzel they would have suffered a poor fate - they could have picked literally almost anyone else and we’d be in good shape with the pick.

Haven't the Phillies been trying to get more power out of Moniak's as well as Randolph's swing? More loft equals less contact and changing what works risks a very confused player. Are we seeing a redo of the Phillies development staff trying to get more RBIs and fewer walks from Bourn.

Whether it is the scouting or the developmental side, the Phils have 3 high draft status outfielder snd all of them have had significant struggles. The problem needs to be identified, isolated and addressed.

I have resorted to desperately hoping that playing in Reading's bandbox next year somehow kickstarts one or both of Moniak or/and Haseley. However, that obviously hasn't worked with Randolph.

Otherwise, come 2020, the Pigs will feature the all-bust outfield of Randolph, Moniak and Haseley.

With regard to the first comment above, as I have said before, be wary of the fast-riser in the draft. Haseley was also a fast riser in the season that led up to him getting picked. Years ago, so was Jeff Jackson. I am coming around to the belief that there is at least a 50% chance that a guy is just having a great season instead of putting things together. That's why I like Bohm in this year's draft. He's been a consistent high performer.

With regard to the second comment, I tend to lean in the direction of player development being the problem. Randolph was a slight reach for where the Phillies picked up but neither Moniak nor Haseley induced any head-scratching or "what are they thinkings" around baseball. The consensus was that they were acceptable picks, unless the consensus is wrong, perhaps for the reasons I stated about the sleek fast-risers.

That's the real concerning factor in play- there isn't much in the position player pipeline to cover for those mistakes. If they don't start to hit on some guys soon (position players) the farm is going to go through a barren spell real soon.

If it's development, the question is, what's going on there? Joe Jordan's been doing this for a while, but has the philosophy changed above him? Has the personnel changed below him?

If they are trying to drastically remake Moniak, maybe it's going to take time but is still a good thing to do (we can only hope). Though why send him up a level right away if that's the case? How would we feel if Moniak was still in Lakewood, and Randolph in Clearwater?

Too early to assume that none of them will contribute, but that's something you hope for from lower round picks, not Top 10.
