I continue to be enthused about Jan Hernandez. I still recall when he was drafted [believe it was in the 3rd round], it was widely acclaimed as a solid pick and he has definitely picked up his offense since he moved to the outfield.

His power is down somewhat but he is hitting well over .300 and seems to have cut down on his strikeouts. Probably, like Grullon, still a longshot to make it but in a year when I have mostly been disappointed with the minor league hitters, these two have given me cause to smile.

This season will be a good test of the new regime, one mistake with minor league players is to put too much emphasis on the beginning of the season, we simply don't know what they're doing with some of these kids - but by August, any changes in swing mechanics, work on a secondary pitch, etc., should be taking hold if the development staff knows what they're doing.

Hernandez and Grullon still lack plate discipline, but Canelo is looking interesting, added some pop, better BB rate, as a defensive infielder he doesn't have to tear up the league, just put up respectable numbers. It's easy to write some of these guys off until you check their age - even Sandberg is only 23.

Kilome is disturbing, 5 walks, start to wonder if he'll ever develop the command and control needed to move up.

Enyel De Los Santos in a runaway

He is in the conversation but I would put Medina and Haseley and Ortiz into that conversation also. De Los Santos still lacks secondaries, so he is not a complete prospect even though the results have been great. And relatively slow starts should not let us dismiss tools and past performance. There is no way guys like Irvin and Grullon and Hall and Falter and Rosso are even in the conversation for #2 though much less top 10. Beware SSS and lack of tools.

I was just listing guys who were in the vicinity of the top 30 previously and have actually succeeded over the first month or so of games. It was a bit of an exaggeration to show how bad the top-ten guys have actually been.

Medina has been scarily bad; Haseley has been making contact but doesn't walk and hasn't hit for power; and Ortiz has somehow forgotten how to make contact (and then got injured just as he was seemingly returning to form. No mention of Moniak--I think I'm going to look away from his results for a while and hope I come back and find him succeeding. I realize these are relatively small samples, but most top prospects never have month-long runs this bad in the minors.

Medina had been better the previous 3 starts...I'm hoping they have him working on some things as the walks are more of a concern.

You left the ever injured Quinn off the list too and he also has produced this year. .785 OPS 12 SB and only 1 CS.

I know there was a little exaggeration of good performances by lesser prospects there. And everyone on our current 2-6 list has kind of been terrible once you graduate Crawford and Kingery and Alfaro from prospect list contention. Falter is the one among the lesser prospect list that I might be most excited about. He was 34th on Matt Winkelman's list, has moved up a level at a young age in a better hitting park and has upped his K rate while lowering his H/9 (some of that might be luck). He just looks like a guy that is clearly top 30 now and might push into the top 20. Hall has raised his status some and might be top 30 material (towards the end of the list). Rosso probably belongs in the 35-50 range somewhere. Grullon somewhere around 30 (making more contact, BB/K ration not really better though so better contact alone is not making him a top prospect). I am intrigued by Will Stewart too. He clearly has figured out control to some degree with his walk rate plummeting. Of course one does not need much command at Lakewood so he has only elevated himself to where Falter was last year. He might be towards the end of the top 50.

Our system definitely took a hit (going from top 5-8 to maybe 12-15) with the promotions of our top 3 prospects. We'll need more sample size from the guys struggling to figure out if the system is worse than that. RIght now I am not prepared to say that and we also have a number of prospects in XST that could make the back end of the season better even before we get to our new draft pick.
