My guess is that he is potentially the most talented guy in the system, a guy who MIGHT become our Acuna or Soto. Lord knows we have been wondering when we might produce one.

I hope and pray that A] he stays healthy and B] the Phils simply leave him alone hitting wise and merely work with him on the finer aspects of baseball.

I could be wrong...but Rojas looks like the real deal to me, a guy who really has 5 tool talent. I won't be surprised if he is a Top 15 prospect by this time next year.

Keep a close eye on him.

Yup, My kids are back from camp, school starting next week. I bought tickets to tomorrow night's game, kinds figring it's the last game we'll go to this season. Considering that I live in NY, getting to three games down in Philly is pretty good, plus another one in NY. So, 4 Phils' games this year.

My premature comp for Rojas is Starling Marte. I don't see that he's going to be a really impactful hitter like Acuna/Soto, but he's got great athleticism, high butt, fast bat and more room to fill out up top.

Honestly, the GCL drives me nuts, I still have no clue how they come up with some of their rules? GCL East has an 8-0 lead in the top of the 5th when it starts raining and instead of finishing the game at a later date, they simply postpone it. I sure hope this means that the game will be completed later this week and not simply cancelled.

Unlikely to happen but the Phils magic number is 1 and they were 3 outs from winning the division. Look, I suspect they will still win the division but I still think this looks bad.

I mean, ultimately, functionally, the GCL is an exhibition league that doesn't charge admission, even with playoff implications I don't think anyone cares if a few games don't get played as long as it could be worked out fairly (and if not, they'd presumably play).

Also you meant GCL West. That game shows up as "cancelled" on their schedule already. (I assume Monday's doubleheader already included a make-up of a postponed game.)

A rudimentary observation some scouts make in assessing athleticism (having a strong butt as opposed to being dumpy and unathletic), as many athletes draw power from the hips and that region of the body. Think of it as prototypical wide receiver body type.

ALL hitters go through slumps. Don't get down on a kid because he's in a slump.

This is true of Moniak, it's true of Hoskins. It's true of Harper. It was true of Ted Williams. This is as basic as it gets; this is baseball.

And what would be wrong with his season stats? He's among the top performers in the eastern league over the whole season and he's still young for the league. I get it...you don't like pointing to development over a period of time. You want to include the bad stretches...you can forget all the ways people focus on improvement and embrace all of it to develop your usual negative outlook.

Absolutely, Squire. No cherry-picking. When the season's over (a few days, now), we can evaluate Moniak's overall season - against the Eastern League as a whole, and against the performance of other 21-year-old center fielders who have spent seasons in that league. Of course, individual development/growth patterns vary, but we should be able to get a sense of what is likely.

Yes, a few games left but unlikely to be significantly changed. Seems to me as a 21 y.o. in AA, it isn’t horrible and certainly improved somewhat (though Aug OPS is back below .700 thus far). However, nothing about any of these stats says “likely above average major league CF.” I hope that’s wrong, but right now not a ton of confidence that it will be.

Look, I completely get where Squire is coming from. Yes, Moniak is young for his league at 21. Yes, his numbers season wise rank in the upper echelon of the league. Yes, he seems to have added some strength and power to his game. Yes, he looks like he will make it to the major leagues, maybe even by September of next year.

But, golly gee, he was the #1 pick in the entire nation, in a year when the Phils KNEW for 9 freaking months that they had the #1 pick in the nation. And fair or not, it pains many Phillie phans to see Nick Senzel, a guy we all debated about and considered and who was very much a known quantity, not only succeeding but succeeding in CF, a position that Moniak was drafted to eventually play in Philadelphia.

BE, I completely understand your point of view and admire and respect that you have been one of MM's strongest and most consistent defenders. As someone who liked the pick, I have tried to be also. And Moniak may still have one giant leap forward in him.

But doggone it, Moniak in many ways and through no fault of his own, represents so much of what we as Phillie phans are most frustrated about. We see Soto and Acuna and even Senzel succeeding and we say, "just once, just one tiny time, can't the Phils be the ones who get that special player?" Its always our opponents who get the guy who turns out great.

And Moniak, again through no fault of his own, represents Exhibit A of what the phans see organizational wise, as yet another example of a potentially botched pick. Because when he was picked we weren't going to be satisfied with 4th outfielder status. We wanted and expected Nick Senzel like excellence.

And it sure hasn't helped that the Phils pretty much indicated that one of the reasons they picked MM was so that they could afford Kevin Gowdy, yet another bitter disappointment. Add to that Cole Stobbe, the players we all thought might become the Three Musketeers since they knew each other well, played together well and were all picked early in the draft.

And while they certainly have not necessarily played instead like the Three Stooges, none of them has yet evoked the confidence that they will someday become impact players. In fact, two of the three look so far like complete disappointments while the other floats somewhere between "he's showing improvement" to "he still looks pretty average."

And Phillie phans were never going to accept "pretty average" from the #1 pick in the entire nation. Never.
