Jake Holmes with his first HR. While he has a low average he has not been striking out that much, so he may have had mediocre luck his first month.

Nice 10-2 win for GCL against a very talented Blue Jay team. Silva now 4-0. As PC indicated, big day for Holmes. Promising that all of #11,12 and 13 round picks [the ones the Phils targeted to sign as over slots] are doing well in their first go rounds in professional baseball.

In fact, all in all, other than Howard, most of the draft picks we hoped would do well have done well. One month to go but first impressions are mostly positive.

Holmes only walked in his final at bat...

10-2 win for the Phillies. The one unsung guy I wanted to point out was the pitcher Manuel Silva. Just 18 years old and the rule at GCL generally is that the youngest pitchers who get starts are the best prospects. We all know about Morales, and Lindow has some notoriety as a relatively high HS draft pick, but Silva has also been in the rotation all season at age 18.

6 1-run innings today drops his ERA to 3.60. He is a skinny left-hander (6'2:,145). Does not strike out a whole lot but neither did Ranger Suarez early on. The Phillies tend to want their young pitchers (especially those from the DSL) to pound the strike zone at first and not try to miss bats. No idea what his stuff is like but he is probably a name to watch (perhaps 2-3 years down the road).

Considering they are all 17-18, the core of Simon Muzziotti, Ben Pelletier, Jonathan Guzman and Brayan Gonzalez have been very good.

Requena making his debut tonight. Hammer is the only recent acquistion who has performed so far, guess Mills should start a game soon. I know someone else has questioned this but I will put it out there also...does anyone know what kind of injury Gomez has?

He was on the DL when acquired and has remained there but have not seen a report on his injury. Anyone know?

Given Silva is 18 and underdeveloped, he'll probably move slow until he fills out, has a velocity jump.
This gives him a couple years to work on mechanics and secondary stuff until he has the FB to handle higher levels.
Seems to be a set pattern with the Phillies, the LA pitchers and HS pitchers tend to move slow until they're physically ready.

Gomez was hit on the hand by a pitch in the first inning on July 19th, when Asheville played Hickory.

Gomez stayed in the game at the time, but the Tourists pinch-hit for him in the third inning (his next plate appearance).

Early runs for 4 of 5 Phils opponents in the night games. Taveras was not helped by the defense behind him, including a horrible throw home by H-Rod on the RBI hit.

Early dingers for C Randolph and Austin Listi and a knock first time up for Haseley.

We'll see over the next month if he's for real (at least at this level), but he did have a great senior year, and really looked like he figured something out.

Grullon hitting so far at Reading, that bears watching given he's got an arm equal to Alfaro and is only 21.

Crawford is still only batting .225 but he no longer has the Pigs' worst batting average. Cozens does at .224.

Really good night on the farm---only 2 late bullpen failures prevented a perfect night.

Stobbe with a GW HR (not walk off). Hall hit one out as well. Taveras looked awesome in his first AAA start. Doesn't want to go back down route 222. Arano blew a save for Reading, but it really was errors by Grullon and MOra that opened the doors. Canelo with a 3-hit game including a HR, Tocci 2/3. Seth McGarry had his worst appearance of the year in his first outing with CLW (blown save). Dominguez pitched well, Randolph and Green homered.
