What do we know about Ethan Evanko? I know he did well last season after signing as an older, undrafted amateur, but I know nothing about his stuff, other than it's obviously been working for him. What I'm asking is whether his stuff is expected to work at higher levels.

Just speculating, but Stephen may be a product of the new org hitting philosophies taking hold...last year at Clearwater, had a GO/AO ratio of 1.42 (and had an OPS of .635); this year it is 0.89 and he has a .796 OPS.

I realize that it’s the chic to rag on Moniak but he is in the top 30 players in the Eastern League in all of the offensive categories at the age of twenty-one. Not all that bad.

I have my doubts about Stephen. It seemed a strange promotion to get him on a roster but then not give him regular playing time like he was being treated as a career minor leaguer (i.e. Jose Antequera). To his credit he has played well enough to stay there, but I think the team was just stashing him at the beginning before they would shuffle him down to Clearwater.

Injuries and promotions have cleared some playing time so let's see how he does now. He still does not have any great tools though. Really needs to add some power if he is not that fast and not a CF.

It's way too early to judge both Moniak and Stephen, but both are 21 and holding their own in AA ball.

You are missing the point in that the way the Phillies use a prospect (combined with their larger sample past performance) is much more important than small sample stuff with strange usage like we see with Stephen. Moniak is likely the far better prospect. If Stephen was close to Moniak he'd be playing every day.

The problem with Josh Stephen is that he hasn't shown much power, yet strikes out in a third of at bats. His walk rate has improved significantly at Reading following the double jump and he is definitely holding his own, which is the good news. He's never had a bad season with the bat and in the past has struck out less than a quarter of his ABs, so is likely still adjusting to AA. I think he has positively surprised the Phillies. It's not like his doing well is a total surprise, he's an 11th round pick, which is where the Phillies traditionally take H.S. players they think very highly of, but aren't sure they can sign. He got a $600K bonus 3 years ago, which is very good money. He is a legit prospect. He is half a year older than Moniak, but his career numbers are comparable/better, except he's not a CF

I suspect the Phillies want to see Nick play centerfield in AAA and get a feeling as to whether he is good enough to at least play center on a limited basis. Being able to play some centerfield makes him more valuable either as a bench player for the Phils, or as a trade piece.
