I went to the Iron Pigs game today. The position players are really a hodgepodge of career minor leaguers, overage prospects, and last-chance guys who have bounced around from organization to organization. The most interesting position players are Damek Tomscha (DAY-mek Tom-SHAY, as I learned today), Joey Meneses (whom I've written about elsewhere, although his early season excellence has fallen off a bit, looking like a small sample blip), and Logan Moore (for his defensive prowess, which was absent today, as he cost the Pigs with a PB and a WP in the top of the 9th). Lively looked pedestrian with a 90-92 FB, and a low 70s curve. Was very effective through 5 IP although he had given up more than his share of hard-hit outs. Gave up 3 or 4 line singles in the 6th, and the Pigs brought in Jake Thompson.

I know what you are thinking, oh no, here goes everything. However, Thompson proceeded to strike out 5 of the next six hitters on a really good Mud Hens team, and they had at least 6 or 7 really bad swings at his pitches--check swings, very late swings, chased high FBs, etc. He looked absolutely unhittable in his 1.2 IP. Like a major league arm throwing to GCL players... I can see why people love him when he's throwing well. His FB hit 94-95 on the stadium gun, I think, which is an uptick in velocity. His breaking stuff was sharp and had a large break.

Thompson left with a 3-2 lead, which Matt McBride, my fellow Lehigh alum, extended to 4-2 on a solid HR to LF. Pigs blew the lead in the bullpen (Rios and Beato), and entered the bottom of the 9th down 5-4. Rickles, who DHed (I had said, "there's a bad team when Nick Rickles is your DH"), made me question my skepticism with a game tying HR, and they scratched out another run for a 6-5 walk-off victory.

Parkinson with Lakewood's league-leading 11th shutout (finished by Russ). Holy cow their staff is dominating.

How would you like to be a Sally League offense facing their pitchers in Lakewood?

Clearwater sweeps their double-header with a walk-off 7-6 win in extra innings--they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th to overcome a 4-run deficit. Haseley and Moniak both got hits, RBIs, and scored in the inning.

Haseley, Moniak and Ortiz have a combined 44 hits in their last 118 at bats.

The better sign for me is Haseley is now also walking more and K'ing less. 6 walks and 4 k's in the last 10 games.

As are Haseley's? He just may have figured things out at High-A and going to the Berks County Bandbox shouldn't hurt him if he is for real.

CLW seems to be priming itself for a strong second half and a run at the second half division title but promotions--which, of course, would be a good thing--could scuttle that.

MIght be worth flipping Randolph and Haseley at some point. Randolph is still really young for the league and a couple months of solid instruction in Clearwater could help him get back on track.

It's one thing to be aggressive with promotions, it's another to be reckless. Guys have to show at least some ability to adjust to the level before being allowed to stay there, or be promoted even further.

Honestly...I think many people on this board have been saying it was way too early to start writing the book. We started seeing "3 busts in a row" posts about a month ago. I'm glad to see a couple of them have at least shown signs of turning it around.

I don't think they, especially Haselley, are complete busts. I think it very fair to say that it is very troubling to have 3 primo first round picks in a row have such inauspicious starts to their careers. With what we know today, it's hard to put a big smiley face on these 3 picks. All comments to date are just in process comments as the season unfolds; the final fan (and expert commentator) verdicts will come at the end of the season. I must add that the in progress fan comments must be weighed against past performance by these guys. I think Randolph was both a scouting and a development problem. A bat-only 1B/LF/DH had to have a tremendous bat, including power, to be drafted in the position in which he was drafted. He did hit quite well in GCL his first year, but hasn't hit nearly enough since then, with this year being pure disaster. He may become a major leaguer, but this was a bad pick. Moniak is in his 3rd non-plus season with the bat and has descended to really bad. For a hit-tool guy, a .277 OBP stinks -- no nice way to describe it, and he's closing in on 200 plate appearances.
