The Fightins almost had the biggest squander I ever saw. Two doubles, a walk, and a pitch over the catcher’s head with no runners thrown out, and no outs. A two out blooper saved them.

Yeah, the NH starting pitcher had a 95+ fastball and a breaking ball in the low 80s. A lot of hitters were out in front of it, but Mickey hung with it. I think Lartigue’s homer was on a fastball.

In the god news department, Mitch Rupert, who has covered the Phils pharm system for 11 years, wrote today on PhuturePhillies that catcher Juan Aparicio is the best pure hitter he has ever seen in the system. Said he can do whatever he wants with the bat.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that Johan Rojas might be a guy who was worth watching and it does seem as if he is getting noticed. I admit it, I have a special place in my baseball heart for guys who put the bat on the ball offensively and both of these guys seem to have that knack.

Will be interesting to see if both of them begin creeping onto Phillie Top 30 lists.

Wow, nice R-Phils comeback. Down to their last out and trailing 8-7, Hall homers, Stephens triples, Bossart singles and the Phils win 9-8. So far, big guys won and its 4-0 for the minors {LHV, Reading, Clearwater and Lakewood with wins].

If Williamsport can win it will be a very rare perfect day for the Phils.

It was an entertaining day in New Hampshire. I can’t say that Reading played all that well, but the ninth inning was certainly clutch and exciting, especially after the eighth inning debacle. The New Hampshire pitcher had good stats coming in, but the Fightins had no trouble teeing off on him. Hall’s home run was crushed, and Moniak’s and Stephen’s hits were also tagged.

It was Garcia’s first AA start; so maybe I shouldn’t be too hard on him, but he does not throw hard. I don’t remember seeing any pitches over 90 mph. He walked the first batter he faced, and of course he scored. He was a lot better than his New Hampshire counterpart, who had trouble throwing strikes and was hit hard when he did. The next two Phillies pitchers were just as bad. Leftwich walked everyone he saw, and Singer got knocked all over the place.

There was a lot to be frustrated with earlier in the game. The pitching, yes, but there were a few times when lack of fundamentals showed. Stephen tried to throw home from deep right field a couple of times when there was no chance, and runners advanced both times. He also didn’t seem to go hard after a hit earlier in the game where it if had, he might have had a play on the batter at 2B. Lartigue failed twice to get a sacrifice bunt down. The Fightins were also surprised with a squeeze bunt and didn’t even get the batter. On one play, Moniak threw over the cutoff man’s head on a play at the plate, but it was a good throw, and there was a play (Hall tried to cut it off, but it was too high—he probably shouldn’t have tried to cut it).

We would have been all over Kapler if he left a reliever in as long as Singer was left in today. Even when the rally was in full swing, Reading didn’t even have anyone warming up. He had to stay out longer until they could get someone loose.

Then there was the second inning rally that started double, double, walk, but n runs had scored because Stephen only got from second to third on the double. It wasn’t a bad play, as he was tagging in case the ball was caught, and there was nobody out, of course. But with the bases loaded and nobody out, Lartigue popped up on the first pitch (after a walk), and Antequera hit a line drive right to the shortstop. Then a pitch to Williams went over the catcher’s head, but Stephen couldn’t score as it bounced back a good ways toward the plate. The bloop hit from Williams finally got two runs home. Really, it was not a bad played inning (except for Lartigue’s first ball popup), just frustrating. Williams made a heads up play to get to second base on the throw home.

Nothing special from Bohm today. His RBI was on a groundout in the ninth.

I was thinking the same thing about Matt Vierling.

I just noticed Sam McWilliams is in AAA now after dominating AA. He’s throwing 94-96, albeit with an awful breaking ball. If anyone could get him to improve it’s the Rays- that kid is going to pitch in the big leagues. I did not see that coming.

The Royals had picked McWilliams in the rule 5 last winter but ended up returning him. He has been pitching pretty well the last few years.
