I have been talking about a systemic failure in the Phillies organization and I think it goes from top to bottom. I simply believe the players are not receiving proper instruction on how to play the game the right way and as my latest example, witness what just happened in Clearwater.

The Clearwater Phils have a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the 8th and sure could use some insurance. Matt Vierling leads off with a double and here is a good way to add a run if the team hits with some idea of doing the right things.
Instead the next hitter grounds out to shortstop [you absolutely MUST get that runner to 3rd, you simply MUST] and the runner stays at 2nd and the next two hitters strike out. Runner doesn't even move up one base.

Oh, and Tampa then scored 2 runs in the top of the 9th and the Phils lost 3-2. Look, I know better than most how difficult hitting can be, I get it. But I also KNOW that solid situational and fundamental hitting skills can be taught and 3 True Outcomes is never going to do that.

It's a weird year on the pharm, some really slow starts, some players grossly underperforming (under the Mendoza line, stratospheric ERAs).

Problem is you don't know what they're doing, are they having pitchers throwing secondary stuff they can't command in games to learn, or promoting hitters to challenge them?

CLW is a tough stadium and league for power, especially for younger players who are not well-muscled yet. His season IS very encouraging. I'd love for him to succeed because of the way we acquired him...
