Meanwhile, Nick Williams continues to mash the ball at LHV. Count me as one who believes Crawford and Williams didn't fail the Phils, the Phils failed them. I fully expect Williams to go elsewhere and have a solid major league career. He did fine till Kapler took over the reigns.

I like Nick Williams, however he is a very bad outfielder. Especially when you consider his athletic gifts. He would need to become a 4-5+ offensive WAR player to overcome the defensive negatives.

His outfield range metrics have always been poor, pre-dating the Phillies. After all this time, I don't think coaching can fix that. He doesn't get good jumps or reads on balls. Maybe enough bat as a DH for someone who needs an inexpensive one.

And notice they switched positions today. Simmons at SS and Stott at 2B. Not sure if it means anything other than getting experience, but I think both of these guys are relatively big shortstops that could easily move to 2B (or 3B but hopefully that will be Bohm long term).

One is going to see what they want to see with regards to Williams in 2017 vs. 2018. I'd say he actually had a very good 2018 under Kapler, who gave him every opportunity once Altherr fizzled out. What he did in 2018 was likely not sustainable as he got exposed to the league but he was still a pretty good hitter in 2018. My guess is the 2018 player is who he is and with no defense, that won't be good enough. Were it otherwise I think the Phillies would have had a decent trade offer for him, whether in March or July.

Yes, I sure understand why Williams, a good hit, bad fielding outfielder would not be of service to the Phillies in 2019. I mean the team is literally bursting with good hitters.

Better to have Rodriguez, Kapler's old buddy, in LF than Willaims because afterall Williams isn't a great outfielder. And Rodrgiuez is?

Williams had enough chances to hit this year. Even at his best he's now the fifth-best LH hitting OF on the 40 (maybe 6th if you include Miller). Rodriguez is a RHB. Even then, sadly, it might be a wash fielding-wise, which doesn't make the player who is 10 years younger look very good.

He has always had to look over his shoulder with Kapler. Mark my words. Williams will go elsewhere and become a solid major league hitter, a guy who will hit 20 home runs, no mean feat with the Phillies.

And I say the good players overcome such adversity and make it impossible to be sent down. Not that the Phillies haven't mishandled a few players over the years. But Williams wasn't really one of them. They should have traded him, certainly. But he was never benched for playing badly. He was asked to be a bench player because he's not Bryce Harper. He didn't answer the call.

I'm sure Williams will hit 20 HRs for someone, and, like Franco, he will still be a negative player.

Seems like a silly wish. Kapler isn't the reason they struggle and if it is, they aren't mentally strong enough to play in the majors.

Kapler hasn’t hurt Kingery or Hoskins. Don’t think he’s to blame for Quinn’s struggles, Haseley too early to say, and don’t think Alfaro has gotten any better away from Kapler.

On what basis are you saying Kapler ruins young players? JPC? He wasn’t healthy during his time, and it is only one example. Clearly not the cause of Williams as noted above.

This is just nonsense, even using Williams as the example. Williams struggled in the majors this season, was sent down and is mashing in AAA. Isn’t it just possible that he’s an average hitting OF with moderate power and poor strike zone judgement and bad defense, which isn’t enough to warrant a starting spot on a contending team?

I mean, the reason guys like Gosselin and Rodriguez and Brad Miller get called up is because they can put up a .950 OPS in AAA too. You'd like to think that youth and desperation to prove himself would make Williams better than the "just happy to be here" guys, but I don't blame him for that (and it really is more about role and defense).

Williams is a bad fielder, that means he has to put up OPS > .850 to have value as a LF.
He hasn't come close to that in the Show, and he's had some long auditions.
Nice to see him tearing up AAA, he may have a future in the AL.
