Odd play in the Reading game. Stovall leads off the 3rd with a single, gets picked off, and is almost immediately ejected.

what is odd about that? players get picked off base often enough.... if they say something about the call they are subjected to getting tossed

Because it happened so quickly and there didn't seem to be a big confrontation. The 1st base ump did have a questionable call earlier in the game, so maybe that played a part in it.

Painter pitched like the stud he is...7 IP, 9 Ks, no BBs, 1 run. Got the win.

I'm not even sure Painter had his best stuff yesterday. Hartford made some contact, but aside from a deepish fly ball or two nothing was hit hard. His offspeed stuff seemed up in the zone from what I saw. He benefited a bit from a big strike zone and a questionable call at 1st.

Still, very impressive.

The biggest issue with Painter is whether they can resist the temptation to rush him.

I think he needs to start next year in AA, then force a promotion to AAA, but give him time to work on his secondary pitches - no matter how dominant he is in the minors with his FB, to be successful as a starter at the ML level he has to have 3 pitches he can throw for strikes.

I think one thing that leads to young pitchers getting injured is rushing them before they trust their secondary pitches, so their response to adversity is to "throw harder" not smarter - and that's how you put undo stress on your arm.

Honestly, I would rather not see Painter next year at the ML level unless he is destroying AAA pitching. No need to start his clock this early, we need him in the 2024-29 period for cost savings and frankly to create a home grown star.

This guy really looks like a stud, no need to rush him. Let him compete for the Rookie if the Year in 2024, maybe give him a few innings at the ML level next September just so he knows what he is looking for and the team gets a taste of what he needs to work on next offseason.
