McGarry IS going tonight for Reading, so the blister issue is apparently not serious. Then Painter Saturday and Abel Sunday.

Mayer is someone to watch, he's raw, a converted IF with limited pitching experience before he was drafted, then missed time due to injury and COVID.

37 JUCO innings and 81 minor league innings since 2019, but he's still only 22.

This year, 56K in 41.2 IP in Clearwater.

It would be foolish to call McGarry up to the ML roster this season. He is not rule 5 eligible and does not have to be protected on the 40 man roster this November. Why lose another player this year and rush him to the majors? I don't think he would be a difference maker now.

It is presumptive to say that he wouldn't be a difference maker now. Also, do September call ups have to be on the 40man and do they start MLB service time clocks? Even if he has to take a 40 man spot you could drop Camargo off it.

Yes he would have to be on the 40 man (back in the day, i.e. until just a few years ago, you could call up all 40 guys in September. But no one else) and his service clock would start.

And the player you would lose is not the guy he replaces now, but rather the Rule 5-eligible prospect you no longer have room for in the off-season, or the returning younger player you cut loose if you need more room.

But, if he can help and is already going to have a chance to make the team out of spring training - or even just by July - that would still outweigh those worries.

The only real cost towards bringing him up in September would be potentially losing an option next year if he does not stick with the club after Spring Training. He is playoff eligible because he was part of the organization prior to 9/1.

I am guessing it is a remote chance the club would choose him, but why not give him a small shot with some relief appearances because they probably want to dial back his innings anyway. What does not work though is that he has not appeared on short rest this season. I think we would want a long reliever for the playoffs that could pitch on at least 2 days rest, not 4 (or sometimes 6) that he has pitched with all season.

They are only barely being coy about it.

Could he be an option out of the Phillies’ bullpen in September?

“He’s got a big arm,” interim manager Rob Thomson said.

Thomson admitted that the Phillies shifted McGarry to a bullpen role to determine if he may be able to help at the major league level down the stretch. In the long term, they continue to view him as a starter.

Yeah, but he's still in Reading.
Morales was lights out in Reading, 30 IP, 9 H, 17 BB, 54 K, 1.48 ERA, but has struggled in Lehigh.

While pitches have made the jump from AA to the majors, I think the more disciplined (far more AAAA types) hitters in AAA ball force a young pitcher to focus more on command and less on just trying to blow the ball by young hitters.

He's in Reading now but they could move him up again if they are serious.

And it's not like the Phillies are inventing this. It's rare, and maybe even a little desperate, but not unprecedented. Including for Dombrowski I believe.

McGarry's stuff is at the 70-80 level; Morales is more like 50-60. I can see why the Phils might be tempted to use hi against MLB hitters.
