Hopefully the Phillies will do the unthinkable and allow him to pitch a 2nd inning. The 5-pitch outing last game was both awesome and yet laughable.

2 innings this time with 2 hits and 4 Ks. Pitch counts are not accurate. It looks like the GCL counting system counts 3 pitches for any at bat that ends in a K, 4 for a BB, and 1 for everything else. Or something really close to that. I think the stats just don't really get done if they are playing on the back fields.

Good news is Painter clearly looks pretty good. Pretty safe to say he should be ready for Clearwater next year.

Some news on Abel. Hard to tell if it is good or bad. Won't pitch again this season but will go to the instructional league.

He'll go to the instructs... but will he pitch. Shoulder injuries can be worse than elbow ones. Jonathon Pettibone sp?showed some promise but never recovered from his shoulder injury. Brink, Tyler Green, Tommie Greene. the list is long. hopefully it is not too serious.

Pena with a much better second outing. Perfect inning with 2 Ks so he'll at least end the season with an ERA below infinity.

Phillies 3 games behind the Yankees though they still have a DH against them next week. Season ends next Saturday for FCL though, so it will be difficult to come back (and odds are likely that there will be rain at some point next week).

What you hope is that they are protecting him and identified something in his delivery that needs to be tweaked outside of a game environment. Then of course, "the Phillies Way" is to try to rehab a serious injury and find out the next season he needs surgery.

Kervin Pichardo is a curious guy. 19 year old 3b struggled to fill in at Clearwater but is hitting well in the FCL in the short time. His physicality stands out as compared to the 'typical' Phillies latin prospect. 64 ABs, 26 walks and 27 ks.

Not much in minor league action today (Monday the 13th) with only FCL/DSL in action. But....

Alexeis Azuajo goes deep in his only at bat. Hitting .405 for the season now. 1.322 OPS.

Or he regressed with his 90 mph fastball back to what he was as a sophomore when he was 4-10 with a 6.38 ERA and allowed 145 hits and 60 walks in 108 innings.

After Gary Sheffield went one pick earlier to the Brewers, everyone chosen later in the first round was a mediocrity or non-MLB player except for Roberto Hernandez who went about 10 picks after the Phils picked Brink. It really was a solid draft up until Sheffield's pick with 5 all-stars in the first 7 picks.

Trivia--Joe Girardi was taken in a lower round of the same draft!

In an (yet another) awful era of baseball, 1989 had a glimmer of hope with Ron Jones and Ricky Jordan coming into the season off of exciting rookie debuts in 1988, Pat Combs debuted and looked incredible, then never looked like the same pitcher again. Then you had Charlies Hayes, Terry Mulholland and Dennis Cook from the Steve Bedrosian trade. Dykstra was fun to watch. Lee Thomas was doing a pretty good job making lots of deals and bringing in guys without the benefit of a good farm system to eventually hit on enough to turn them into the 1993 team. "Always get an arm back" was his motto, and he'd get Tommy Greene, Curt Schilling, David West, Ben Rivera and Jose DeJesus who all had varying degrees of success. Lee Thomas was making moves like Dave Dombrowski would eventually become famous for, less the big deals anyway. A kid could fool themselves into thinking the team was going to be good again soon.

I think it's been said a few times already over the past year-plus... a '93 type run (or a 2013 Red Sox run) was about all this team could hope for, and for the next couple of years too. But this year there was neither a Stocker nor great platoons.
