Because I prefer to see the glass as half full instead of half empty I am celebrating the rebirth of such former top prospects like Devi Grullon, Zack Green and Jan Hernandez instead of spending all my precious time lamenting the struggles of Cornelius Randolph [massive], Mickey Mantle, er I mean Mickey Moniak [ large], and Adam Haseley [ small but subtle].

I recall the days not that long ago when Grullon, Hernandez and Green were all either top 30 prospects or threatening to enter the then not too rarefied air of Phille Phuture Phenoms.

Where am I going with this? I am convinced that the Phillies new hitting philosophy has altered somewhat almost every hitter in the organization and logic suggests to me that whenever there is a massive change in hitting philosophies, some will adapt and flourish whereas others will struggle and fall by the wayside.

And while I am prepared to acknowledge the Reading Phenomena [everyone looks like Babe Ruth at Reading] I also suspect that some of these successes have as much to do with how they have adapted to this change in hitting strategy as it does where they are currently hitting.

My instincts still tell me that Haseley will someday wear a Phillie uniform, Moniak is 50-50 and Randolph will go down with the ranks of Jeff Jackson, Larry Greene and Chad McConnell as failed #1 hitting prospects with the organization.

The Pigs looked good in game 1 although the PawSox don’t seem to be very good. Anderson looked good, and I was surprised he was removed in the fifth. Fastball averaged about 93. Cozens hit two homers, both part of back to back jacks. The Pigs hit a lot of balls hard though the PawSox pitchers were not impressive, especially the starter. The lefty they brought in in the third inning was the only one who was any good, whiffing almost every one of the hitters he faced, who were all LH.

The Pigs manager doesn’t coach 3B. Can’t remember the last time I saw that in a minor league game.

Surely, although I'm worried about Spencer Howard's outing. Short and bad. Doesn't appear to be a rain delay. I suspect he's hurting.

Another quick hook in game 2. Leibrandt had given up three straight hits, including a home run to the son of the guy we traded Ryne Sandberg for. Bullpen was great. The homers in this game just barely made it out although a stiff wind was blowing in from RF in the second half of the game.

The positive side of the short Howard outing was the first appearance by Andrew Brown. He was very good at Williamsport last year and was a little surprised he did not start the season in Lakewood. Must be managing his innings (along with Kyle Young). Start the 20-year-olds in late May so they top out at 90-100 innings.

I don’t know the reason why Howard struggled so much, but he threw 39 pitches in his one inning. Seems like that’s the reason for being pulled.
