85-90 mph today, painting his spots. Fastball looked like it had good run when up, but hitters were swinging at it like they couldn’t see it. Announcers call a pitch he was throwing in the low 80s a changeup, but it was cutting and I thought it was just a bad slider. Big, sharp overhand curve in the low 70s.

A good changeup often moves like a two seamer, opposite direction of a sharp slider.
Which is why it's a good pitch against batter on the opposite side (i.e. RHP to LH hitter).

Just back from the LV game.

Grullon came to bat in the first inning with runners at 1B and 2B, and hit a seed up the alley in RCF, plating both runners. Next AB, he hit one out to RCF that clanked around the Martin Guitar (for those who have been to Coca-Cola park). 3rd AB, ripped a ground ball right at the 3B. Fourth AB, with a runner on third, hooked a screaming liner into the corner in LF for an RBI double (almost out at 2B, beat the tag with a really weird rolling slide). He looks supremely confident at the plate, but you would too if you were hitting over .350 I guess... Reminds me of Carlos Ruiz who broke out in AAA. Should have some value to the Phils in a backup/DH role or as a trade piece.

Suarez has a really good slider. Got lots of bad swings and misses from the Buffalo guys, but he really doesn't have an effective 2nd pitch. Needs to locate an average FB.

Dohy has a good slow curve (mid-70s mph) and a 90 mph deceptive FB. Pitched decently and had a bit of bad luck.

Rodriguez, Adams, Romine, and McBride are really good AAA players, but Antequera and Cumana aren't even good AA guys. If the Phils send a CF to LV who gets through waivers they should contend for the IL title. Grullon has MVP stats so far.

What was your impression of him behind the plate? All the past balls and inability to throw anyone out that shows up in the box score makes it seem like he can’t move anymore.

Seems to be this year's Ramon Rosso though I think there were many reports of him in the 90-92 range. I had hoped his stuff had ticked up a bit since he was so good in Australia and early this year in Lakewood, but it may be because he is a relatively smart and polished pitcher (Kiwi bias - who would expect that?).

They'll have to get him to Clearwater if he keeps pitching this well. Hopefully he does project a little more because he is still young.

He was pretty solid behind the dish, although one low breaking pitch skittered through his 5-hole after it hit the back corner of the plate--that's a pretty tough pitch to handle. The LV pitchers are not quick to the plate. I didn't get his pop times, but I understand they're at least average. He frames well, calls a good game.
