Question? Were both Azuale and Victor Diaz both high salaried Phillie international signees? If so, it seems they may have possibly made great choices based on the early returns.

It is my opinion that the biggest difference between the Braves and Phillies is in their ability to find stud young players...the latest being Riley with the Braves.
With this in mind, I find the early returns on players like Bohm, Azuale, Diaz as well as Kingery's performance as somewhat promising.

They were medium-bonus guys. Diaz got $250K. Azuaje was not announced since he was from Venezuela but was ranked in the range where I think players were getting somewhere in the $250K-$400K range. I think they were the 2 largest bonuses we gave to position players last years. Largest was Starlyn Castillo who should be in GCL next week and then a pitcher (Ortega) who is in DSL along with the new Aussie kid.

Good to see them play well though. Azuaje was noted for his speed, not power which has been a nice surprise.

As I mentioned a few days ago, I have come full circle in my interest in the Phillies at this site. Started out following predominantly the minor leagues in the late 80's since the major league club was terrible and I am back to going to this thread first when I come to the site.

Interesting night on the pharm, to wit: fun to see Bohm and Moniak hitting back to back at Reading, and doing some damage while at it. Parkinson with a solid start and their lineup is one to dream on.

Squire's favorite team, Clearwater, has a few interesting items, as mentioned Ortiz with HR #12, and 5th in 5 games, while Glogoski tossed 5 pretty spectacular innings in his debut.

Williamsport still can't score but tonight they are not scoring with several of the Phils recent draftees. So at least that makes for some fun box score perusing.

Both Bohm and Moniak have looked very good tonight. Moniak has hit three over the outfield (though the CF just ran down the last one). Bohm looks like he belongs here.

This was a fun game to be at (and I don’t regret missing the Phillies game either). Parkinson was pretty good. I can’t tell how fast anyone was throwing; the scoreboard gun never had a pitch over 90. Parkinson was faster than the Portland starter though.

Bohm and Moniak were the offensive stars with four hits and a walk between them (and no cheapies). Grenny Cumana is a new favorite of mine—I like small guys and he is Altuve sized. He had two hits and was spraying the ball all over the place. Bossart isn’t much of a hitter but literally knocked over the shortstop with a hard grounder.

Generally good defense: the only one who looked shaky to me was Randolph (until he made the play of the game to end it). He made the plays, though. He didn’t look good at the plate, but I guess that’s not news.

nice to see you here CD. i was thinking of you yesterday morning as i wanted to post something about one of your SC kids. i never got a chance to. up until last night, josh stephen has been slowly climbing up the ladder in his hitting. i remember you and some other posters, i think, commenting on his nice swing. i saw this first hand a few weeks ago at the stadium in reading. he looks pretty good. i also think he is getting more of a chance to play now. that could be a reason for the recent success. i think he is still young for the league. any thoughts on if he can make it? defensively, he did not have much of a chance that night, so i don't know his defensive capabilities. with bohm moving up now and moniak has been hitting better, they have a chance to beat trenton in the second half. still waiting for sixto to show up. someone said back before the season started they hoped he would be in AA this year at some point. i'm still waiting to see him:pensive:

Thanks G-man, appreciate your kind words. As for Stephen, I am encouraged that he is already in AA ball at such a young age. He was always known as an offensive player more than a defensive player while in HS so its his bat which will have to play well for him to make the next step,

Power is also limited so there's that also. But its not as if the Phils are overloaded with quality outfielders so he certainly has a chance. Which leads me to my next point.

I have always been much more optimistic about Moniak than many, though if I had to do that draft over again I would have taken Senzel. Moniak is still growing into his body and has gotten stronger as his professional career develops. I think he is going to have a solid major league career if they just leave him alone and let him play. He is a very talented player.

Interesting that the Phils had him hitting 3rd and Bohm 2nd last night. Who knows what it means in the long term but I know this much...the Phils desperately need Bohm to succeed and it always helps a hitter if there is a good hitter batting behind you. To me, this shows that they have lots of confidence in MM. So do I.
