Bryson Stott has just 1 error so far. The guy is a dude and I’m thoroughly impressed. Unlike many of the big league Phillies, he plays like he’s in the game. Great instincts, hands, he’s playing to win, and hits like a left handed Jean Segura- he lines the ball all around the field with the ability to drive the ball out of the park when he gets a mistake.

Stott, Bohm and Howard are the only sure things in the organization.

I’m also really impressed with Simmons- he does a really good job of being aggressive on early hittable strikes. But he needs to prove himself at the next level to get a better sense of what he really is.

Medina was mostly 92 and his breaking ball was sweepy- not quite as sharp as it had been. Probably goes without saying but his stuff doesn’t look the same as last year. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a good bullpen guy!

To be fair, good rotation starter was always a best-case with Medina. How often does best case actualize even after A ball? Maybe 20% of the time?

There are a handful of guys that are 90% no doubt big leaguers. Everyone else is suspect until they prove it. The only way to defend against that is numbers and depth- missing from this organization.

Hi Fish. Obviously, I hope you're correct in your predictions about Stott, Bohm and Howard. However, I find worrisome Bohm's home and away splits. At age 23 in Reading, his OPS is an impressive 1.018 (98 ABs). His away OPS is a much less promising 0.694 (109 ABs). Comparatively, FWIW, Maikel Franco at age 20 in Reading had home and away OPS splits of 0.984 / 0.871. Are the samples too small to be relevant or does Bohm easily pass the eye test?

Those SSS stats are way too small to mean much. Much of the OPS is driven by home runs and sometimes you barrel the ball and sometimes you don't. Those even out over time. The park might account for 100-150 points of OPS difference on average for a power hitter but not more.

Even in those splits you see his BB and K ratios hold up and they are a much better indication of Bohm as a hitter at this stage (i.e. the hit tool). Those are slightly better on the road than at home. Not that the difference means anything, but we would likely see worse ratios on the road if his performance at home were due to the park.

Bohm is a major league hitter. A good hit tool in a player with power is hard to find. He may not have massive power (more a 25 HR guy in our old pre-juiced ball metrics), but he might be able to hit .300 with a good number of walks and a relatively low number of Ks. His larger question is still on defense.

Bohm easily passes the eye test. While I don’t think he’s quite ready, I think his ability to control the zone and time in the fall league would put him in a place to hold his own and improve at the big league level next year.

Howard kind of pitches like a bullpen guy- throwing hard in the zone, but not always the best quality of strikes. His stuff is good enough in AA to dominate with that approach. He does seem to have a knack for coming up big in the spotlight so I’d be all for bringing him up ASAP.

I think of him as a Ryan Zimmerman type, if that helps, with larger defensive issues (although injuries did force Zimmerman to move to 1B, which I expect to happen with Bohm once Hoskins reaches FA if not before).

I've read the rumours that Phillies are considering promoting Howard to the majors in September. As much as I support a programme of challenging young players, the 'juiced ball' concerns me.
