Nick Madrigal is up in High A already. Not dominating but just being Nick Madrigal. .294 over 3 levels with few BBs (4) or Ks (3) though he has been hit 6 times. Playing 2B and not SS. Guessing he will be up by the middle of next season.

gmwannabe, I believe you are thinking of HS lefty Matthew Liberatore.

He is one of about a dozen first round picks made after Alec Bohm who are having far more success in their inaugural (half) seasons. Incidentally they are both playing in the Gulf Coast League, but Liberatore is 18 whereas Bohm is now 22.

A .300 average may be an underrated tool (thinking of Madrigal) in this day and age. Hits are more valuable than walks and the ability to hit to all fields might pose an advantage against potential shifts or (with teams like the Phillies) that put up a sub-par defense. An Altuve can have a 4.8 WAR in a year he has an 812 OPS when he is only a good but not great defensive player.

I don't think Madrigal's ceiling is 300/330/400. That is probably more a mid-level projection though I am thinking he'll have more like a .350 OBP if he hit .300 because of the HBPs. Guys with hit tools and modest power often develop more (like Altuve did). Watching his development will be fascinating. Probably start in AA next year and would not be shocked if he is in the majors by the All Star break. There is more than one way to be good in baseball.

I know. It is just interesting to look at the guy who was probably our 2nd choice. Now Bohm has not been healthy and was not as polished, so it is not a fair comparison. But I also wonder if the industry gets so obsessed with walks that an OBP that has more hits in it might be one of those Moneyball value plays. We know Klentak backs all his decisions with analytics and we are pretty sure he was in heavy on Madrigal too.

Madrigal was not at the top of my list but the skillset is very hard to ignore. He does enough things well enough that he earned being picked so high. It will be interesting to see how fast he and Bohm move through the system. Madrigal was easily the highest floor in this draft.

Well, it's certain that for any given OBP, hits are more valuable than BB. I guess the question would have to do with variance - is a typical batter's BB% more, or less variable than his BA? If the BB% is less variable (more consistent) year to year, that would tend to offset some of the higher value within OBP that comes from BA.

It's also further complicated by the type of hitter - if the hits that offset walks in a given player's OBP are all singles, that's less interesting than if the hitter also has some power.

I think where I'm coming down is that a GM has to look at the individual mix - BA, BB%, ISO - to evaluate each player's OBP. The good thing for the Phillies is that Klentak, unlike some of his predecessors, actually seems to be aware of all this stuff. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll make the right decisions, but I have to figure the likelihood of that is better than in the past.
