Somehow Lakewood took a combined no hitter into the 9th....and then gave up 7 runs and lost 7-5

Nice SSS start by Gutierrez at Lakewood. 8-20 and alternating with Marchan to give us 2 catchers age 19 and 20 who both look like decent long term prospects. Remember it is pretty rare that catchers this young at Lakewood put up decent numbers. Grullon was a 608 OPS guy in his age 19 season and 695 at age 20 at Lakewood.

The Gowdy start was nice. Control is still off and on which is to be expected, but this is the first example of him missing bats in his career and as a polished 4-pitch pitcher he really should be able to miss bats at lower levels of the minors. And at age 21 he is not young for the level, but still not super old even with all the missed time.

One other interesting note about Lakewood now that they have been through the rotation twice. They are NOT going with a 6-man rotation. They are going with a 5x2 tandem rotation. In 10 games they have started 9 different players with only Gowdy (the best prospect who also needs to be handled with care) the only to start twice. McArthur is the one "starter" who has only gotten 2 relief appearances. My guess is these tandem starts will continue all season if pitchers are healthy and stretching starters out to 6 innings is probably not a priority. I think they want these starters to get 25 appearances and maybe 90-100 total innings.

Clearwater, on the other hand, seems to be going with a 6-man traditional rotation.

If this is a new organizational philosophy, I wonder if we will see tandem starts move up the organizational ladder to higher levels in coming years. In the majors it might not be the worst thing to look at the Phillies rotation and say Nola and Arrieta are traditional, durable starters and the other 3 starts should be filled by tandem starters. With pitching roster limits it is tricky to do on a 13-man staff (you can't have 10 starters), but what if this was purposeful and they were trained on a 4-man tandem rotation? 40 4-inning outings might be better for a pitcher than 32 5-6 inning outings.

It will be interesting to see how the pitchers fare in this 5x2 tandem rotation format. There shouldn't be but I do think starting is a mental thing for these guys. So far it seems like Ethan Lindow is dominating when he starts the game but quite bad when he comes in in the middle of the game.
