Interesting that I always think this is Squire's favorite day of the year [well, maybe with the exception of Draft Day] because the GCL teams begin play and all 7 affiliate teams are now playing real games.

That said, if memory serves me, and I think it does, it also seems to end in a day of disappointment as the GCL teams almost invariably lose their opener.

Perhaps this year will be different.

Still some work to do on the West roster. There are also a few 60-day DL transactions unfortunately. The French pitcher Antonac. Bailey Cummings. Starlyn Castillo and his 2002 birthday!

Currently winning both GCL games.

New name that could be interesting: Andrick Nava. He is a 2018 J2 signee still 17. Been on base all 4 times with 3 BBs and a hit. Listed as catcher but DH'ing today (left-handed). He was one of the other names in the immediate J2 signing articles that signed right away, listed alongside Azuaje and Diaz and Ortega. So guessing he has a mid-level bonus. Difference with him is that he is in GCL and not DSL and the Phillies do not do that often with sub-500K bonus guys.

Also, Eduar Segovia dominating on the mound. Second year pro who is 18. Only relieved last year in the DSL (the best prospects generally start) so he too must have improved. 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K.

Also at GCL, Jose Tortolero reappears. $450K signee from 2016, played 2017 in the DSL but was injured all of last season. HR today. 19 years old now.

It's just so hard to figure out DSL/GCL players.
Even the ones that falter, sometimes turn it around the next year.
17-19 year olds are in flux, physically and mentally.

You don't really get a read until Williamsport, when they play college kids.

Trenton pitcher sits atop the same Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet that Bohm and Moniak and Ortiz are on. He is listed at a whopping 5 foot 9.

Sometimes you have to credit the pitching. I didn't see the game, but this might have been one of those times. There was some luck, too. Randolph lined out to the track, Moniak ripped a grounder down the 1B line that the 1B made a great play on, Randolph ripped a grounder right at the 1B. Haseley got HBP, Bohm walked, Hall walked twice. All in all, though, good pitching by Trenton.

The Reading game is available on Milb.tv. If the minor leagues employed replay, that would not have been a no hitter. Umps missed calls and the scorer definitely was in favor of the home team. But the outcome of the game was never in question so it doesn’t really matter.
