Small sample size, but you haven't quite got the bat going yet either. More like a few phans who are committed to seeing negativity pretty much everywhere. The big club is 8 games over .500, way above expectations, and some phans continue to grumble about the manager, the GM, etc.

I do have to say, it's an interesting concept - that one can be "scarred" by one's own perceptions, whether or not those perceptions are grounded in enough data to mean anything. Talk about self-inflicted injury!

Julio, you are welcome to your own opinion. My post was not about the big club, whose success I also revel in and am thankful for.

Great franchises don't miss on consecutive first round picks, and my opinion - based on the statistics put up by Randolph and Moniak, especially - is that the Phillies are on track to have wasted those picks. Adam Haseley, at this stage, is also a missed opportunity compared to hitters like Adell and Hiura taken shortly after him.

I think we can all agree that we would all be more excited about the future if Bohm starts his career with more success than his 3 predecessors.

Even with one of those 3 now hitting in the .300 range and moniak at least showing some signs of life we still have some sticking to the same talking point almost as if it gives them comfort. We're already sending notes to a guy who has played for like 2 weeks?

One prospect that does not seem to be progressing unfortunately is Alex Garcia. 15th round draft choice last year out of UCSB. Only threw 29 bad innings in 3 years of college (29 BB) and then did not pitch at all last year. But supposedly had mid-90s stuff that could move quickly as a reliever if he could find the strike zone.

4 outings. 3.2 IP, 10 BB so far.

No. 11 prospect Enyel De Los Santos pitched six strong innings on Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks. De Los Santos did not record a strikeout, which may be somewhat concerning. De Los Santos just so happens to be lined up to pitch on the same day as Vince Velasquez, who just hit the DL, so his next start may be with the big club.

If VV is going to be out for a while I could see them making a move but since they can skip a start and he probably wont miss more than 2 or 3 I imagine we'll see Lively, or they'll give Leiter or Thompson a shot. Plus there is Eickhoff, he might be ready, but either way, the next 40-man spot is his.

The idea of seeing what De Los Santos or Irvin can do is intriguing but so is the idea of just leaving them down there, as tradeable "prospects," instead of risking that they come up and don't look ready.

Lively makes sense, for one thing you might want to "showcase" him with the trade deadline coming up.
He's a legitimate back of the rotation starter, and for teams with an injury or a SP who went south, could have real value.

He'd make more sense if he weren't currently on the DL. He last pitched June 20, went on DL retroactive to June 23 with a "right shoulder sprain." That could be a short term thing though, I'm not sure.

As of now, it's probably Drew Anderson--big start for him tonight to earn the audtion--or piecing it together in a bullpen game with Leiter, Thompson and company.

Lively probably does deserve another look, there are guys in the rotation who have been pitching just as badly as he did. In fact, it's kind of amazing they did so well this month (or a tribute to the other three guys):

Lively was 0-2 with a 6.85 ERA in five starts when he got sent down.

Arrietta was 0-4 with a 6.66 ERA in five June starts.

Pivetta was 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA in six June starts.

I find myself getting excited when I look at Yerwin Trejo's stats (OPS, SBs) at GCL, but then I remind myself that he's 21 1/2 years old, and in his third pro season. He'll have to move very quickly to get to the big leagues before we lose him.

Well, YMMV, but my rule of thumb is to discount anything less than 300 plate appearances. Even then, given the significant standard deviation of annual BA/SLG/OBP stats, the confidence interval is pretty large.
