For those of us who hate the minor league rule of starting extra innings with a runner on second base, here is Exhibit A...unintended consequences. The pitcher for Tampa has a 7 inning perfect game,but its scoreless so Clearwater gets to start the 8th with a runner on second base. Perfect game gone.

Hopefully the big leagues sees this and takes a pause on ever considering this poor rule.

It's a great rule CD. Why is what you're citing a bad consequence of the rule? Clearwater scored without a hit in the top of the 8th, and managed to keep Tampa from scoring their bonus runner, so they won despite being no-hit, 1-0. A very interesting game.

Garcia threw a perfect 7-inning game. He didn't win it because his team didn't score for him, not because of the "bonus runner" rule. Tampa was unable to keep Luke Williams from scoring because they messed up a rundown and made a bad throw to the plate. So they lost. CLW didn't make those mistakes so they won.

And the rule ends games in a reasonable time without burning out the arms of young pitchers.

This is just not right. I will never support such a rule. It really messes up the stats and baseball is more stats driven than any other sport.

I have far less problem with a 7 inning game than with messing with player stats with the start the inning with a runner on second rule. That rule has NO place in baseball at any level.

LoneStar, I usually agree with your opinions, but I don't understand how the bonus runner messes with anyone's stats. If the run scores it's unearned, if you knock in the run you get the RBI, etc.

The stat problem seems relatively simple to me - a runner placed on 2B should not be charged to the pitcher in any way - it need not affect a perfect game (he didn't put the runner on). If he retires the side, he still has a perfect game. He's not responsible for the runner - if the runner scores, it's not charged to him. The team loses, but he doesn't get a "loss." He doesn't get a "blown save." Putting the runner on makes it more likely that the game will end, but need not impact the pitcher's stats AT ALL.

Yes, this means there will be games with no "losing pitcher" - and realistically, there should be games with no "winning pitcher" either. MLB can establish rational rules for when pitchers are credited with wins and losses, without requiring that somebody be "picked" in each of those categories by a scorer when it's not obvious. The "need" to fill a line in the box score should not drive any kind of serious stat keeping.

In this case the pitcher who had the PG had already been removed from the game, so it didn't affect the PG. The only affect on stats, really, is charging the "loss" to the pitcher who starts the extra inning, and we all pretty much agree that win and loss stats are bogus anyway.

I certainly understand what's not to like it about it. Personally, I enjoy extra innings marathons and don't think eliminating them is going to make baseball faster or more appealling to casual/younger fans. That work needs to be done in the regular nine inning games.

You could also just have a separate set of "extra-inning" stats for such situations. Borrowing from hockey, not that hockey's rules aren't annoying too (in that case I was perfectly happy with ties). But would actually be interesting (if very small sample) so see which hitters/teams end games the minute they step to the plate with a man on a second in the 10th inning, and which pitchers keep that guy from scoring.

(I believe MLB wouldn't do it in the 10th inning, there's talk of maybe, the 12th?)

I don't think the purpose of the bonus runner rule is so much to speed up the game as it is to protect pitchers' arms in the short term due to marathon extra-inning games. It does both, and I'm OK with the slight statistical aberrations.

Its a terrible rule, absolutely terrible. And while I respect those who defend it, I wonder if their views would be different had the Phils not scored one run for Halladay in his perfecto against the Marlins in 2010.

And no amount of Houdini justifications about not punishing a pitcher with a loss or an earned run or the such would have changed that fact that it simply cannot be a perfect game if a runner is on base...and likely scores via a sac bunt and sac fly.

As for saving pitchers arms, good Lord, we now see rosters with 13 pitchers, if we have to do anything else to save their arms I guess it will be to ask them to pitch underhanded at some point. I still find it a salient fact that the 1977 Phillies, still arguably the most gifted Phillie team of the modern era, went through their season with 9 pitchers, none of whom suffered arm problems that year and other than Brusstar in '78, none did the following year either.

The main argument for the rule in the minors is that ultimately, the games don't matter as much. Both development and entertainment (and not making your underpaid staff stay at work two extra hours) are more important than stats, or even wins. Of course, you could address all of these things by just having ties.

This is nothing but a semantic game. If the extra-inning runner is not defined as altering a perfect game, then it does not alter a perfect game. If the definition of a perfect game is "no runners allowed to reach base, with the exception of runners who open an inning on base due to Rule [whatever]," then there is no issue. IMHO, CD doesn't like the rule, and he's using the "perfect game" argument to criticize the rule - but there's no logical reason why the rule need affect a perfect game - unless you adopt a "definition" of a perfect game that suits the purpose of criticizing the rule.

Plus, how many pitchers in baseball history have even pitched the 10th inning of a no-hitter or perfect game? How many perfect games or no-hitters have been thrown in 7-inning minor league doubleheaders, and are they even that impressive?
