Nice day for the GCL teams, 8-1 and 8-4 wins and only 4 hits surrendered in the two games, ALL by the GCL Tigers. Castillo part of the no-hitter.

Sang with his first professional home run, solid days for Nava and Greenwalt. I am intrigued by Greenwalt, who looks like a pretty good hitter. Nice to see Pujols back in action, though few come back completely from Achillies Heel tears.

Sang had another 3-hit game Saturday to go with this one. Good to see. Castillo has been better each outing which is also good. Between him and Gessner we might have a couple of fast-moving pitchers (though Gessner is much more polished so is more likely to be at Lakewood next year than Castillo.

The bats definitely look interesting. The pitching staff is on the weak side for prospects with several draftees like Miller and Schulze that are worth watching but few significant promotions from GCL. Next year that will change with Vargas and Betancourt and Gessner and Ramey and Segovia and Castillo all being potential promotions that have a chance to be in our top 30. I was surprised to see the staff this year has a 2.97 ERA but that is mainly from the park and a bunch of 22-year-olds.

Kendall Simmons seems one to watch with his power especially if he can stick at 2B. Most of our power hitting HS SS we draft have a pretty quick conversion to 3B or LF, so Simmons sticking in the middle infield is a good sign knowing that he probably won't play much SS with Stott around.

Simmons is intriguing but he's going to need to hit a little more...his average has not been great over the last two seasons. he seemed to have a decent hit tool pre-draft.

That is definitely true. Though as a 6th round pick (with a bonus of $750K that is more like a 4th round bonus), expectations are a bit lower. The low average could easily mean sub-Mendoza line at Lakewood next year. He is doing a bit better than Cole Stobbe at Williamsport in the equivalent year but there is not a big enough difference yet to project him. I just like the fact that he is staying in the middle infield which lowers the bar offensively.

Once you get past the million plus bonuses you are often signing kids with a couple of tools and hope the baseball skills develop over time. He clearly fits that mold at least.

PC mentioned last night about Clearwater's collapse. I think this is a natural progression of players getting promoted. For instance, it is not surprising to me that Williamsport is not winning consistently since adding Stott, Miller and Rojas to their lineup, These are 3 very good players.

Clearwater's lineup looks much worse than it did 6 weeks ago. By the way, I sometimes think LHV's lineup with Franco, Williams, Gooslin, Grullon Listi, Morrison, Castillo and Pirela looks as good as a few major league lineups [Marlins, White Sox].

Well... If veteran players are unhappy at being in AAA instead of the majors, and they're in AAA because their performance has been marginal, they have a choice. If they allow their "unhappiness" to negatively impact their performance, they reduce or eliminate their chances of returning to the majors. If they can overcome their disappointment, use it as an incentive to do better, their chances improve.

Yeah, I know. They're human, they have emotions and psyches like the rest of us. But some of us treat setbacks as a challenge; some treat setbacks as 'unfair,' and pout.

My point remains the same. I am not suggesting that they are not going to try and play well, of course they will. But winning is quite secondary to them, it simply is. My gosh, this is a completely human trait. Of course we can assume that playing well generally pays off with winning. Generally but not always.

And julio, we all know that veterans in Triple A rarely believe they belong there. I mentioned 3 and stand by it. Franco did not look at his demotion as something warranted, he believes he is better than Rodriguez. Same with Williams, you don't hire Scott Boras as an agent if you believe you belong in AAA ball. Morrison has mentioned on several occasions this year that he thinks he belongs in the major leagues, if he didn't feel this way he wouldn't have left the Yankees, where he was doing quite well in AAA ball.

The young guys [Grullon, Hernandez] are looking at this as an opportunity. Not so the guys I mentioned. If I am wrong, then we sure should expect LHV to be winning more consistently, especially now with Franco. yet, that hasn't been the case. I think Franco will hit well at LHV, I do not expect the team to win any more consistently.

We shall see.

I'm sure plenty of Boras clients never get out of (or even to) AAA ball. We just never hear about them after they're drafted.

Neither Franco nor Williams can afford to sulk (and Williams hasn't, really). Franco will be back to making six figures (or very low seven) next season if he doesn't somehow tear up AAA and have a good September with whatever playing time he gets. (And even then, his trade value at his current salary level is probalby kaput.)

Didn't ever really understand LoMo's train of thought. I guess maybe he's gambling on Bruce's health? 'Cause he's not beating out Brad Miller. Given the Dickerson trade, I would think he might ask for his release by the end of the month if not before.

And when did I ever say that Boras clients never end up in AAA ball. I said no such thing. I said players don't hire Boras if they expect to spend their careers in AAA ball. Believe me, Boras gets a very good percentage of a player's original bonus and players who think that check is likely to be the last good one will be less inclined to give it to an agent who gets a higher percentage of your first contract.

Look, I hope these guys play well, hit well, field flawlessly, and contribute to a long winning streak which can only enhance the records of Irvin and DeLosSantos among others. I always want the minor clubs to win, just do.

Like I said, lets see how this plays out. I still believe that clubhouse has more than a normal share of unhappy players who feel the Phillies have mishandled them. Are they correct? I am not saying that.

What I am fairly sure of is that once you have tasted success in the majors and believe you still belong there, winning in AAA ball becomes verrrrrry secondary to getting the heck out of there.

To put what CD is getting at in to simple words: It's selfishness, as opposed to team play.

Certainly a real phenomenon. But in my opinion, that's not a function of whether the player is a prospect on his way up, or a marginal veteran on his way out. It's not a function of whether he believes he's in AAA because he earned it at AA, or believes he should be in the majors, not AAA.

It's a function of character. To an extent, all human beings are selfish - self-preservation is pretty basic. But some people have the ability, whether intellectual, moral, religious, or whatever, to master the baser human instincts and become something more than just another animal. Other people, to one degree or another, do not.

That's why, when Zach Eflin gets moved to the 'pen, his response is, "I should have pitched better," not "I don't deserve this."

Yep, and I certainly do not suggest that all players act this way. I suspect Gooselin, who grew up a Phillies phan, is simply happy to still be in the organization and playing ball and will likely be the perfect teammate and player. He is probably going to be in minor league ball as long as he wishes and might occasionally get a September callup.

And to a certain extent it is selfishness. But it exists, more than baseball fans realize, and can make minor league baseball a very different experience than what they were used to in high school or college ball.

I recall one player who came to bat one game and some on the bench were hoping he would strike out because it was widely rumored that he had one more game to show he deserved to stay and he had been 0-3 to that point. He struck out and I never saw him again after he left the clubhouse.
