Worse than I might have even guessed. The excuse that they couldn't find traditional apartments doesn't justify any of this:

Two players must share a standard room with two queen beds at a designated team hotel. Only the Allentown hotel has suites with a kitchenette.

In Reading, players must check out of the hotel after a homestand, check back in upon returning from a road trip, and therefore take all their belongings with them on the road.

Visiting spouses or significant others, children, and other guests aren’t permitted to stay overnight.

Players may opt out of the plan and secure alternative housing, but at their own expense and only if they were drafted before 2020 and have spent at least two full seasons in the minors.

I wish I could read the article, but if accurate that does not sit well with me. They need to do more for these guys. To make them check out when on the road is ridiculous- no wonder they are not doing that well.

Worst in baseball! It seems the Phillies minor leaguers have a very negative attitude toward the organization and its treatment of them, and that this goes beyond all the flip-flopping in the development program. Just another reason our minor leagues continue to be so unproductive. Is the guy running this program incompetent, or does he have orders to save a buck? It's really hard to find any information suggesting that the Phillies are doing a good job in scouting/player development. Just way too many process failures like this one, and like not knowing the age of your top international signee. It would be nice to see some signs of minor league progress. Where are they? I have yet to read a convincing justification for the Phillies virtual abandonment of the lush Dominican market. What do we actually have to show for our transfer of focus to VZ?

Given the current major league payroll, this organizations is no longer cheap. It does seem to follow a stricter caste system than can be found anywhere in the third world, and minor leaguers are definitely viewed as uppity serfs by some dinosaurs in management. The Phillies have always seemed to believe in a great deal of 'dues paying' by the young, before they are entitled to decent treatment.

"Lee McDaniel, the Phillies’ longtime director of minor league operations" seems to be one of the dinosaurs, who needs to be fired.

I can tell you that apartments are really scarce in and around Allentown. If the Phillies could find apartments for the AAA Iron Pigs, they could certainly find them for AA Reading. It seems the players had no trouble identifying them. This stinks

Agree. I define cheap as cutting corners on small things like minor league rooms. They have not been cheap this year with major league payroll for sure.

yes it's baffling this team would still penny-pinch while paying the salaries of not only the major league players, but someone like Dombrowski.

And there's no apartments for the Iron Pigs either. They just got hotels with kitchenettes. At least they don't have to check out on road trips. Man.

Incredible that a club spending so much to try to undo a decade of mistakes still does stupid things like this. They deserve all of the public shaming they are about to get, and even they have to know that, once it starts, they’ll still be hearing about it from their fans for 15 years after they’ve corrected the problem.

Hit the link to the Inquirer article in bkox' post. As soon as the article opens, hit the "Reader" icon in the nav bar (it's the AA icon). As long as you invoke the Reader before the page puts up the "subscribe" dialog, you will have access to the article.

On my desktop, using Chrome, I use an extension called Mercury Reader. It provides similar functionality. This doesn't work on all paywalled sites, but it works on a lot of them. You lose the graphics, and some formatting, but most of the time, you can access the text.

As far as I recall the Inquirer lets you read a certain number of sites before putting up the paywall which is why I suggested incognito (and of course you can also clear cookies). I could be wrong. But I don't necessarily agree with some of the other things suggested, which to my mind is more actively deciding to repeatedly not pay for a good and service (and a nonprofit at that) that also pays the salary of the person who reported that story.

Thanks Julio - I figured out reader mode with your help. The icon to press was different, but a google search revealed what would work on my iPad. Still going to try everyone’s suggestions to have more options in different situations.

I don't want to make a big thing about this, but do you feel the same about ad blocking? I use ad blocking for multiple reasons, but the internet would almost be unreadable without it.

I understand your point, but I'm not sure how your suggestion is also not trying to get around paying for a service. I don't think disabling javascript is all that malicious.

For the record, I don't read the Inquirer. I don't even try to get around The Athletic as I like their content and would pay for it.

I did not read Zambonir’s post carefully enough - I get the point of getting around a firewall and impacting the pay of the writer. I will use my new found power judiciously. Usually I don’t care enough for the article to consider paying for it, but I did want to read this article about Phils minor leaguers. I did pay for the Athletic because I wanted to read the Phils (and Pirates) articles and some general BB stories, but I will probably cancel as I have not read enough of this site in the past 2 years to warrant continued use. It is a good site, but I read it once or twice a month. Usually when it is linked here.

I mean, kind of, sure. It certainly has the same impact on the ability of a website make money. But I also get it,

The hair I'm splitting with incognito is it is temporary or occasional thing. And it definitely doesn't work that often. But if I'm trying to read something in the Boston Globe or some far-flung thing I'm gonna do just like everybody else. The Inquirer & Athletic & four or five other papers I do subscribe too. (It is still a terrible system! I'd say there should be something like Spotify - which many people do - or a la carte but nobody's getting paid from those models either).

Often, a headline will come up on my news feed that turns out is a link to a paywalled site. If so, and it’s a site I’m not likely to use enough to subscribe to, I just move on without reading it. It’s funny that sometimes there will be a message that I have reached my monthly limit of articles. Usually it’s a site I have never read an article on, or at least not for many months. Either the algorithm is flawed, or the monthly limit is zero, which makes the term monthly moot.

i'm up in the Berkshires this weekend and actually paid 99 cents for a month's subscription to the paper but of course now I have to call to cancel (which is supposed to no longer be allowed but reality has not caught up). that sort of thing only encourages looking for angles and loopholes. Ditto jacked up renewal rates where you can just cancel and then subscribe again, which i have done with the Inquirer (probably should with The Athletic too tbh though I'm assuming it's also going to end up in a NYT bundle).

Sorry, we are firmly in the "sports media" topic now, so let me bring it back to the Inquirer's fine (but terrible) article. The thing that I found most ridiculous was the guy in Clearwater saying he needed more time to become familiar with the housing markets in their affiliate cities. These are all cities the Phillies have been in for years; it is their failure to not use local people to help them (but that would have cost money too, and also highlights the flaws of the new central ownership model).
