with a free night and no one at home, I decided to head to the reading game. my first time out this year. boy what a weird night of baseball. I guess this is a testament to the Phils drafting and farm system, but, in the line up, I only knew Moniak, Ortiz and O'Hoppe. all the other players I never heard of. All minor league free agents and never remembered it to be that way. I've been going to games out there for over 55 years. on the pitching side, I remember the Garcia draft and the signing of Billy Sullivan. Very strange and I don't think that bodes well for the near future. I think we should all pump the brakes on MM. Not a good night. he struck out 3 times and was fooled all evening by the Mets' pitching. he didn't look good at the plate. he did slap a single through the hole between 1st and 2nd for his only hit. Ortiz k'd 3 times as well with .me on base. he did hit a screaming one hopper that the 3B had no chance on for a single. this was the first I had seen him play. I remember some comments through the years about his size (weight) and the worry that he would get too heavy. well, I'll tell you that he did not look heavy (fat) at all. the body looks real good. hopefully he can figure it out. O'hoppe had a single as well. The best part of the evening, and could be trouble for the future, was the Mets catcher. he had 2 homers. one over the beer area in LF and one to straight away center halfway up the hill. at least 425 feet. I got home and happened to look a the mets site and their prospects. here this Alvarez kid is their top prospect. Vicious swing and had another hit to boot. I can see why he is at the top. Nice night at the park, cloudy and not too hot by a disappointment in seeing that team and the future. I guess all the others are on the lower teams. maybe next year, Painter, Abel, Rojas, Garcia etc will be there.
