That is correct, except for the 'substantial' part. As I remember the coverage, 'pork chop' had been a derogatory term used among Bethlehem Steel workers decades prior to the fans voting it as the nickname. When the Morning Call interviewed numerous Hispanics in Allentown and Bethlehem, almost nobody had ever heard of the term in any usage. This is not surprising, since the vast majority of local Hispanic families did not live in the Lehigh Valley at the time 'pork chop' was used as Bethlehem Steel. Pork Chop was a lousy name in any case, and I think the team was anxious to ditch it. I know it was a tip of the cap to Arbogast and Bastian, which was a big Allentown company in the recent past. 'Bacons' might have been a better choice. Or, since it was built on the grounds of the recently closed Western Electric/Bell Labs/Agere microelectronics manufacturing facility perhaps 'Chips', 'Circuits', 'Silicon Bells' -- proving how bad I am at names.
Coca Cola Park/Iron Pigs was contentious in Allentown, because it took up land in a land-locked city, but was a Lehigh County government arrangement, not a City of Allentown project and then picked a name associated with Bethlehem.
