He looks leaner than when I saw him a couple of years ago. Hard to tell the quality of pitchers he was facing, but he seems to be doing some good things in terms of working the count and using the whole field. Good for him. He may never be great, but he might be putting himself at least in the AAAA OF mix.

That was my first impression too. Not only was he working the count, but he was tracking pitches well- he made contact with every pitch he swung at. He always 'looked' like a good hitter but couldn't put up results. He looked pull happy at times in the past. The way he hit the ball last night was attention grabbing.

Matt Vierling was a guy that looked like a good hitter when he first entered the system. It could be that the Phils just messed him up and now he, like Randolph, is starting to get better instruction from the organization and putting up better results..

Single, double, double, double, HR, HR <--last six Cornelius "Babe Ruth" Randolph at bats.

To be fair, the first two were a broken-bat single and a bloop opposite-field double, but the other four were ripped.

Pipkin good. Appel not. Jordi Martinez rocketing up the prospect rankings. Unranked to maybe 20th?

Pipkin was 95-97 in the first and up to 99 in the second. Really good 86 mph slider, if not sometimes short like a cutter. Average 78 mph curve. Poor change. I think he’s a big leaguer some day, though profiles as a reliever.
