Does it seem odd how many early to mid-20s year old players the Phillies have on their FCL roster while younger guys who seemed to take a step forward in the Dominican last year are back there again? If feels like a blanket assessment that the older guys on the roster and the younger guys left for another year in the Dominican just aren’t that good….which is disappointing.

It is the roster limits at work. Repeating the DSL is replacing that first year in the FCL and the FCL is more like the old shortseason. In about a month the draft will add 20-30 more players into the org and every one that gets added will replace one of those old guys. Right now I have them at 179 of the 180 roster limit. If you bring over guys like Aroon Escobar and others then you would run into a real roster log jam or you have to send them back to the DSL

Another thing is that anyone in the complex working on things is on the FCL roster (so Troy Schreffler who had barely played and Francisco Morales). So really the list of old guys is like Haake, Alifano, and Kotowski.

DSL quality is probably increasing too, so if a 17-year-old like Caba does well there it probably means more than it would have meant a couple of years ago.

I do dislike all those rehab players in the limited number of FCL games. The FCL really is not as good as the GCL used to be. It gets few draftees until the final weeks, so it is a bunch of players from the system last year not good enough for full season ball (Kotowski) and second tier Latin American prospects. Bergolla skips all the way to A ball and Aroon Escobar stays in DSL an extra year. Maybe the play quality is as good as ever, but the prospects there may not be.

I'm not sure why the BlueClaws aren't using Orion Kerkering this week....but while still listed as active, he hasn't pitched since 6/3. And there have been some games since then where you'd think he would be used.

Better the FCL than Clearwater, when it comes to rehab players.
FCL games are less important, since a lot of the time is hands on coaching and games are more extended practice.
Whereas the prospects at Clearwater are getting serious PT and don't need to be blocked by rehab players.

Good rehab news last night. Hall's bat is coming into form and Nelson returned in AAA for 3 innings. I feel a lot better about Nelson going 2-3 innings in these bullpen games as opposed to Covey.
