They are not really stretching Painter out much more the last few starts. The difference is he is using more pitches (rather than just his best 2). It is probably why he has given up a handful of runs lately, but it is making him a more rounded pitcher.
No idea about the plan for him. I assume they do want to get him to Jersey Shore at some point, though that is not really the priority. Improving his 4-pitch arsenal is the immediate priority while keeping him healthy on modest pitch counts.
