Is Keaton Anthony, whose 1-game OPS in Jersey is approaching 1500, going to earn prospect consideration as a UDFA? Would be quite a positive surprise, as I'm sure his promotion was. If he can get to AAA next year and succeed he would be a 24 or 25 yr old rookie. No place for him in Philly, though, I believe he is 1B only.

Anthony is just turning 23 this week. Not young, but also not old. He was 22 in his last college season but like many missed his freshman year in 2020 so he still had a year of eligibility left. Jersey Shore is the level a college prospect should make it to in their first full season though obviously good prospects might make it to Reading before the end of the year.

As to his prospect status I have no idea if he was a 4th/5th round type but it certainly looks like he would have been drafted somewhere without the scandal. Hopefully he has learned his lesson and the Phillies got an underrated talent.

It would be very weird if Isaiah Rogers and Keaton Anthony both make it in Philly after falling afoul of the gambling policies in both sports. I don't like seeing the human cost of the widespread availability of gambling since I'm old enough to remember when you had to have a bookie to do this (and I think it was harder for athletes to get involved). I can't help but feel like there is some sort of hypocrisy involved when the sports themselves are pushing gambling every 5 minutes or so, but their own players lose careers (in some cases) for using the endorsed product.

I don't really see it as a hypocrisy - or that hard to understand - that gambling is a legal thing that you can do as much as you like except if it involves your own sport/team. Buying and selling stock (especially in the Internet age) is also a form of gambling with the exact same stipulations!

No doubt the NCAA and the leagues did not up their education and outreach on it as fast as legalization and Internet usage did (or put as much effort into that as their partnerships). But more of these guys than not knew they were breaking the rules (just like with sticky stuff or PEDs).

The answer to what will make Anthony a prospect, is that he needs to hit for more power. With Clearwater he had a 90th percentile EV of 101.7 mph which was behind guys like Saltiban and Caicuto and a max of 105.6 mph which was near the bottom. He has a good chase and zone contact rates (similar to Miller's) and he doesn't swing and miss on offspeed pitches. In June he hit the ball harder and in the air more. He might make a Phillies top 50 if I mapped one out, but first basemen need to hit for power and until he does that he isn't going to rate out particularly high (and that isn't just the extra base hit side of it, it is showing the raw power that could get to the extra base hit side).
