Jhailyn Ortiz was ejected in the top of the first. Home plate ump called a swing on a check swing for strike 2, and Ortiz pointed to the 1B ump, implying he should have checked. Then Ortiz was rung up for strike 3. He stood at the plate arguing and was tossed. From my vantage, both calls looked correct.

I saw much better pitching at AA than I saw the day before at AAA. Tyler Phillips was pretty good. The only run he allowed scored on a double error—steal of second with a wild throw, which Rojas booted. Zarbnisky and McKay were a bit shaky, but after the last two days, I couldn’t help but think that maybe they should swap the AAA and AA staffs.

The Reading hitters were good. Most impressive was Nick Podkul, the guy who replaced Ortiz, whose triple would have left most parks.

I wasn’t too impressed with the fielding. Besides the double error, I didn’t see much range in the infield—there were a couple of hits I thought should have been fielded. Baron Radcliff forgot the number of outs one time.

A better game than I saw the day before. I didn’t mind not having a couple hours of rain delays either.

Noah Song week down in Florida. Too late to have a full 30 day rehab and then 90 days on the roster, but the 30 day clock should be real. FCL is home today at noon with the usual TBD starter.

I guess the thinking is, if it works, he's good enough to be a fringe major league reliever for the rest of the season, with that experience, a full off-season and spring training, he would be good enough to never actually leave the 26 (though after 90 days he still could).

Of course he could also easily pitch for a couple of weeks in late July and then just end up on the IL with soreness (or a real issue).

At the moment the roster bar he needs to clear is Dylan Covey.

At the moment, yes. But by the time his 30 days are over the picture should be very different. Bellatti and Brogdon, could be back up, there will possibly be a trade acquisition.

I think Covey's job security has been based on his ability - albeit, dubious ability - to provide bulk (and as insurance for an injury to a starter) and not sure Song can do that. But for sure they could probably hide him/only use him in low leverage spots for August and then bring up another pitcher in September.

I guess the trade scenario could also happen. Maybe do a bigger deal with Boston at the deadline which works his rights in.

Of course everything is fluid and injuries happen - but at the moment Covey is the low man on the totem pole and occupies a 40-man roster spot that Song will need.

Showed nothing until this season, now is tearing up the Eastern League, .986 OPS (and BABIP only .306).

No full season minor league games for the second day in a row. There is mostly a good reason for this as Milb wants to have games next Monday July 3 (which is likely a sellout attendance day) instead of today so they pushed this week's 6-game series back a day.

No Darick Hall sightings in Chicago unfortunately.

If memory serves (to go slightly O/T) last year was the first time the Phillies didn't play on July 4 (which was a Monday) in years. This year they are off on July 3 but play (away) on the 4th.
