The best righthander in last years draft continues to scuffle in Low A

I think it depends on why he’s scuffling - by all accounts his fastball has good velocity and he has adequate command or better, but his secondary pitches are weak.

If he’s being forced to throw the other pitches to work on them and he isn’t there yet, then I’m not too worried, at least not yet (end of the season, maybe somewhat worried). However, if he’s relying on the fastball and still getting hit...that’s another thing.

No, it should be rescinded for demanding that Appel be subbed into the deal. He went for the guy who was toast, so he had a big name for CYA. The Astros were all too willing to oblige.

Appel was an upside gamble, they thought the Astros handled him wrong and they could salvage him.
Sometimes you whiff.
But he also traded for De Los Santos.

It's just ironic that the Appel/Arauz move was considered higher value for the Phillies due to questions about Velasquez's health. Though I still think it was less about leverage as depth. They simply decided they wanted more pitching and it's hard to say they were wrong about that. I don't think anyone had any illusions about Appel, but the upside/pedigree was hard to resist. Smart people may have been wrong about trying to save him but smart people were also wrong about Jake Thompson. Or, nobody was really wrong and it's all just a bit of a crapshoot, as it also is when someone like Eickhoff (maybe) or De Los Santos exceeds expectations.

What the Phillies may have missed about Appel in retrospect was not his health or stuff or mechanics, but the fact that he didn't have that blind passion to stay in the game at any cost (or in any role).

There was no pressure on Klentak to make the deal look good; the deal was already really good, and it was for a relief pitcher (who's a big question mark himself now).

Velasquez may, as yet, turn out to be more valuable than Giles. But, the "what could have been" if we had the more valuable Velasquez along with Fisher and H.Arauz. As I've said before, the reworking of the deal was understandable in hindsight (aside from adding the two Arauzes). It just blew up in our faces as Appel flatlined and Fisher blossomed (and now H.Arauz may be emerging as a serious prospect).

Thankfully, I don’t think Giles moves the needle on this club anyway so it may be a suboptimal deal, but not particularly damaging except in an opportunity cost kind of way.
