I think we can dissect and rationalize Moniak until we are blue in the face. We want him so badly to live up to his draft selection. But it just doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen on the level that we want. He is what his stats say he is. And he is a roughly .260 career minor league hitter. That unfortunately doesn’t translate into real big league success.

Aside from the obvious top guys, I think Erik Miller is going to be one of the most interesting Phils prospects to follow next year. He has a chance to be a fast mover.

Garrett Cleavinger is really old (25) but he has put it together this past month or so for Reading. He's always struck out a lot of guys, but now not walking so many and still not getting hit. He's also still left-handed.

Bring him up and check him out. September is now becoming "Extended Spring Training" carried forward! Sad to say, but lets get some value from what's left and this might be a good example.

We may have been able to live with it easier if Gowdy didn't get hurt and was co-ace with Howard at Reading, if Stobbe wasn't a bust and if Irvin and Romero were in the Phillies' rotation. Hence, we are looking at the possibility that the 2016 Phillies draft may end up being the worst in the history of the MLB draft for a team that had the #1 pick.

Hmm. Have you looked at these drafts, or is this hyperbole? Or... is it a suggestion for research? We're going out in a few minutes (something up-county my wife has proposed we check out), but it actually sounds like an interesting exercise - look at career WAR produced by the draft class of each club with the 1:1 pick, from 1965 forward. Just a matter of spending some time on baseball-reference and doing the math. Only "question" would be how to deal with guys who made the majors, but generated negative WAR.

Example: 1998 Phils. Positive WAR = 55.3. Negative WAR = -1.7. Net WAR = 53.6.

Do we include negative WAR - or do we chalk that up to poor decision-making by GMs and managers who put those guys on rosters, and into games? (Most of the above negative was Eric Valent.)

No offense Squire but that statement would appear to be one of a player failing to meet your expectations. Stephen has been a very positive surprise with the bat this year but his tools are not as good as Moniaks. I think you would have difficulty finding any scout that would agree Stephen is a better player than Moniak or has more upside. And that is not a knock on Stephen who has definitely justified the decision to put him in AA.

I think the player development staff should be acknowledged for pushing Stephen and Moniak and other players to AA this year because they have forged the best record in AA despite having the youngest pitchers and players in the league. Even though we all clamor for that superstar prospect, it's a team sport and this AA group knows how to win. And Moniak and Stephen are a big part of the team's success.

The minor league staff has made a lot of changes this year, from a bigger emphasis on video instruction and mechanics to aggressively promoting players. Which tells me it's going to take a couple years to know if this is good or bad.

Garcia's a good example, a more conservative regime would have had him at Williamsport after XST. Will struggling in Lakewood all season hurt or help his development?
