Shortstop Luis Garcia with a 2-out, 3-run HR in the 9th to win it for GCL West today. He went 4-5, avg now .377.

It's maybe 125 plate appearances and he's 17, but my oh my.

With the kind of numbers he is putting up as a 17 year old in the GCL, Luis Garcia would be getting Top 25 overall prospect consideration had he been signed by the Yankees, the Red Sox or the Dodgers.

When Gene Mauch was manager of the Phillies he had a saying to his pitcher when they went into the 8th inning with a one run lead.."six more ground balls to Amaro." This was because Ruben Amaro Sr. was so sure handed and dependable defensively.

As impressive to me as Garcia's 2 out, 3 run home run [his first as a professional] was his defense in the bottom of the 9th. One run lead, one out, tying run at 2nd base, two straight ground balls to Garcia, he fields both of the cleanly and throws out the hitters, game over.

Especially in the lower minors, youngsters tend to think about their at bats even when they are on defense, this is often why so many GCL teams make so many errors and misplays. They are brought up to believe its the hitting that will get them to the majors.

It would have been very easy for Garcia to be thinking about his first home run as a pro and the impact it had and then made a miscue on the balls hit to him. Not so, he fielded both, made the proper throws and the GCL Phils won a game they looked like they would lose.

Very impressive offense and defense.

3B JAKE HOLMES to Williamsport

If Bohm is not going to play, might as well promote a prospect who is clearly ready and might have been promoted earlier if we did not have a second GCL team. He was old for his HS class too (turned 20 in July) so it would be nice to get him to Lakewood next year as we discussed a few days ago. Hopefully that extra year of age is not making us overly optimistic about his GCL performance (that Baseball Reference bias for July birthdays where we all think they are a year younger).

On the bright side Randolph, Moniak, and Haseley all have had base hits early in their games.

Haseley went 2 for 5 for Reading with a double and an RBI. Pujols was 1 for 3.

Clearwater was down 6-0 after 3 innings, but came back to win, 9-6. Moniak went 2 for 4 with an RBI in that game.

You really need to look past batting average; it's just not a very useful benchmark in isolation. OBP is far more meaningful, as is SLG (although SLG will be less relevant to Moniak, I expect).

Well, right now I'm happy that Moniak is making consistent contact.
At 20 years old, he has time to develop plate discipline and refine his swing to generate more power.
I'm not looking for Trout, I'll be more than happy if he becomes the next Yelich.

I realize BA isn’t the end all be all but I figure if he gets it up Into the .270s that means he is stringing together several multi hit games over the course of the remainder of the season. That would basically be a “win” for Moniak this season imo.

I think we would all be thrilled with Yellich. Sadly, so far, he doesn't look anything like that. He has been improving lately, but he still has a long way to go to be more than a passing thought prospect.

True, but the problem for me is that is walk rate has gone down each of the last two seasons. He could reach teabag's .275 BA and barely surpass a .300 obp. I realize he is facing less wild pitcher than he did in GCL and at Lakewood, but the trend in walk rate is still discouraging.
