Rain delay start. His curve ball looked a little bigger than usual. He gave up a bloop, walked a guy on a borderline pitch, and then after overpowering guillium on 3 fastballs (2 swinging 1 foul) he threw a hanging curve into his wheelhouse for the homer.

In Howard’s first start he really drove his fastball down in the zone for strikes. Since then he’s been living more up in the zone. He’ll get away with that in the minors but I think refining his command is still a priority. Stuff is big league. His change may be his second best pitch this year. He used to be primary fastball slider, but his slider usage looks like he’s bumped it to his 4th pitch.

Perhaps the Phillies are teaching him to pitch up in the zone like they do with Velasquez and Pivetta? This is not a criticism of Howard. Just he has never really pitched in a high home run environment like Reading (or AAA and the majors now) so maybe he has not had to pitch like the Phillies will want him to in the big leagues.
