Even though Will Stewart is no longer with the Phillies organization, I thought it was of interest to see he was throwing a no-hitter. He went 7 2/3 before giving up a hit. Nice outing for him and I wish him well with the Marlins.

They are kind of teaching his 3 true outcomes approach these days. If Cozens ends up as a Joey Gallo type that is OK with me. It is not that he does not "get it". It is that he is not quite good enough at it to be a major league regular at this point.

De Los Santos has a FB as good as the three kids on the Phillies, if he's refining his secondary pitches, he's got the same shot at that #3-#5 spot, we're seeing what that is doing for Eflin, and what the failure to do so is doing to the future of Pivetta and Velasquez.

One reason Howard could shoot up the ranks isn't the velocity on his FB, but that he has four pitches he's using already, and they're good enough that he doesn't have to make huge strides with them, but just incremental improvements.

To me the key pitch in today's ML is the changeup, if you have a plus changeup and good velocity on your FB and decent command, you can get by with average breaking stuff - but ask Nola what happens when your change goes south. A pitching coach who can teach kids how to throw a good changeup they can command is worth a 7 figure salary.

I don't think anybody disagrees with this - just with whether the problem is that Cozens "doesn't get it," or whether he's just not capable of doing better. Your choice of phrase implies (to me, at least) a problem of attitude, stubbornness, will, when the issue may just as well be vision, reaction time, etc. I shy away from characterizations that imply weakness of character, when the commenter is in no position to make such judgment.

They've been working on his swing for years, I'm not implying a character issue, I'm just sayin' he doesn't look like he's ever going to figure out how to make consistent contact, he doesn't have to hit .300, but he has to show he can get a bat on a ball with high exit velocity on a consistent basis, because whatever holes AAA pitchers are exploiting, will be totally exposed in the Show.
