Some info on promotions. One interesting nugget - no instructionals in Clearwater this year. There will be a camp in the Dominican that might draw some U.S. players.

If I had to guess the U.S. leagues just go a bit longer and those players are available for various "performance" camps in the offseason. Just guessing this is a way to keep the DSL campus going with offseason activity until the winter prospect leagues there.

I went Iron Pigs game last night with the Rail Riders. I felt right at home with so many guys who have been up with the Phillies. Derrick Hall’s home run was a line shot to right field. It got there in a hurry. Pitchers didn’t impress, way too many walks, except Marte, who looked good in the ninth. Despite the walks, all but the walk off run for SWB came in an error filled inning that was embarrassing. Even Marchan joined in the fun.

Sf, always nice to hear first-hand accounts of minor league games. My son and his brass quartet played the national anthem for the Rail Riders today prior to the DH. They have played frequently for the Iron Pigs and have played three times in Philly, too.

A year ago at this time I was at the Iron Pigs game expecting to see Bryce Harper and getting Brandon Marsh (and Hall and Guthrie and Mark Appel) instead.

I think there is a pretty good case to make Hall the extra hitter for September. It is not as if we are using our utility player (Castro) anyway. Might as well get some pinch hit power off the bench. Probably a better defensive 1B than Cave too (though offensively Cave might offer more including the flexibility obviously to move to the OF).

Unless he has an injury that isn’t readily apparent, he has the looks of someone who is tired and frustrated…which is is a little odd because he started late. I wonder if they’d consider winter ball for him. A successful stint in the AFL could be a boost to him. A bad run and that should be enough to tell them to make him a reliever.

I just wonder if the robo umps/challenge system got in his head. Stark article from last week confirmed that MLB moved the top of the zone down 2 inches this season as part of their experiment. This has let hitters like Cave and Hall prosper by looking for pitches to hit in a small part of the strike zone.

For someone like McGarry who lives on the high strike his reaction might be to try to be too perfect. Which then results in walks or hard hit balls because being perfect (i.e. Nola/Wheeler type of command) is just not in Griff's skillset.

I don't think he is hurt, but I probably would be careful with him and manage him on short outings the rest of the way and shut him down if things get messy. There is a reason they keep adding AAA arms for the AAA postseason.

Things move quickly in the DSL playoffs. Sunday was the first game of the semi-finals against the Pirates and they lost 3-1.

Game 2 this morning and they are up 5-0 after 7 with Luis Gonzalez pitching all 7 shutout innings. Assume game 3 tomorrow if they hold on.

And they won it. 18 year old Luis spun a beauty. keep an eye on that Phillies White pitching ( I hope that doesn't sound bad) staff. They have a few real young ones that have pitched well this year.
