According to the Phillies transaction log, Jamari Baylor was traded to the Rockies for cash. Baylor was their 3rd round pick in 2019. He showed great bat speed, but huge contact issues and in the last season+ his defense fell apart and plummeted down depth charts.

According to minor league transaction logs, the Phillies have traded LHP Ethan Lindow to the Seattle Mariner for cash. Lindow was the Phillies 5th round pick in 2017. Velocity was always an issue and has regressed of late.

It certainly makes sense to raise the 40-man at least to 41, so that there are the same number of guys not on the MLB roster as before that roster was expanded to 26.

It seems like there is no momentum from front offices to do this; given everything else MLB has done with regards to the minors and minor league rosters, they would view this as a concession in the CBA to add one measly extra 40-man level salary (or two).

I'm not sure it really matters/is a bad thing though. It's definitely better for players to get DFA'ed or traded than picked in the Rule 5. And if they don't develop fast enough or teams fail to develop them fast enough, so be it. They probably should have at least done this temporarily in the COVID era though (particularly when the major league rosters were even bigger, but also last year and this year with so many guys having lost a year).

Not better to clear waivers and lose your 40-man salary though (Ortiz can afford it, as can Kingery of course, but not everyone can).

Ricketts was a 7th round pick out of college last year and played in CLW after signing. He is now 23 and was tearing up low-A ball, so I think he would have been promoted by now under the old roster limits. If anything, I thought his promotion was a bit slow. Kerkering is 22 and as a reliever only had 10 IP in CLW this year, but he was untouchable. He got 6 CLW IP last year and was very good, although he did give up a little over a hit per IP. His 2023 numbers are just silly. It was definitely time to promote him. The new rules had nothing to do with it. Outlandish K-rate.and only 2 hits in 10 IP -- he did not belong in low-A,

Moving out Lindlow, Baylor, etc. this quickly almost certainly was influenced by the new limits.
The draft is coming up, they may want to promote players from the DSL at some point, etc.
So there's less patience with those deemed to be non prospects.
If you keep these players on minor league rosters, you're obliged to give them some PT that could go to other minor league players.

Nah, I was focused on how quickly these moves were made this year.
It's mid-May and they're moving on from 3 "prospects" and a waiver wire guy (Allegyer).

There is just nothing new there. Failed prospects get released. The development of current prospects like Kerkering is completely independent of the other decisions.

This one is worth noting. Was drafted 70th overall in 2021. Has not hit much in pro ball and has not even played this year. Supposedly not a great defender. They must have liked something a couple of years ago prior to the draft.
