He can be moved to the 60 day DL to make an opening on the 40 man roster until after the season. I don't think he will survive on the 40 man roster when it is redone after the season.

Rosters are the least of his concerns. He would do well to get healthy and then go down to the Dominican or some other Winter League to show off his potential. I am guessing the foot did not help after he got sent down, so unfortunately it is a lost year for him.

FWIW he'd probably get claimed if he was outrighted when he was healthy like Altherr. Whether that happens after foot surgery is another story. Probably not, but he gets a little extra money to sign with someone in AAA.

I think Adam is ready for the promotion, but I also wonder if the Odubel situation pushed this along just a little. I believe the Phils want to find out all they can about whether Haseley can help them this year, and how he fares in a reasonable sample at AAA will help them answer that.

Now I think they want to see him do well in AAA for 30-50 games before any chance of a promotion, but left-handed bats that can play CF is not exactly a ML strong suit at the moment. Quinn is now a RH bat. And Williams does not play CF.

And Quinn can't play center field, either. Playing center field requires that the player be able to take the field...

It would be mean if directed at Quinn - but he's not reading our board (to the best of my knkowledge!). But directed at fans, it's not mean - it's just a reminder that Quinn should be discounted to zero value, because there's simply no evidence that he's ever going to be able to contribute on a regular, reliable basis.

Believe me, this disappoints me as much as anybody. But I'm more or less where I was when Ron Jones blew out the second knee; I recognized that he simply wasn't going to be a factor. I don't expect Quinn to be a factor, and I would consider it foolish and irresponsible for Matt Klentak to anticipate that Quinn will ever be a factor.

If I'm wrong... well, that's unexpected value, and there's nothing wrong with that! But if I'm planning, I'm assuming that Roman Quinn, for all practical purposes, does not exist as a Philllie.

The Herrera situation combined with the Williams situation will likely force the issue, though I think it was going to be forced anyway. One or both them will be traded in-season and if Quinn sticks around he probably doesn't survive on the 40 (especially if Haseley's going on it).

This is possible. Not sure it is "likely" though. It is possible Quinn will stay healthy and it is possible that Williams will start to hit. Neither is guaranteed, but they are actually things that are probably 50-50 in terms of odds. Williams has put up a 750-800 OPS before which might be enough for a platoon role. Quinn has played half seasons in the minors before without getting hurt (several times). We also need to see how Kingery plays. Cutch has little range any more, but Kingery's instincts out there look mediocre also.

We could need a CF if none of the options hits well. But if they do, is the offense enough to offset the defense.

Cutch still has good speed, though he's lost a step or two.

Kingery just needs time, he was a college OF before he moved to 2B, so it's not completely alien to him - and he has the speed to be a plus CF if he can get a feel for the ball.

Even then, the overall defense is much improved over last season, which was a disaster. (word choice edited, pc--mod.)

Agreed. Any Phillies plan that counts on Quinn being a viable ML player is foolish, as he has yet to show he can actually be available and healthy on anything approaching a regular basis. Being healthy enough to play is a gating issue.

There was an interesting article, I think the NYT, how a team changed BP from 50 MPH lollipops to moving a pitching machine closer and throwing 90+ MPH as well as breaking balls so hitters can practice against pitches similar to what they see in a game. Idea was hitting lollipops (like the HR derby) just throws your timing off.

Phillies were mentioned as one of the teams picking up on this for both the majors and minors.
Given they're also working with that hitting consulting group, I wonder about the changes that have been made in minor league instruction - unfortunately,doesn't seem like our beat writers have pursued this avenue of inquiry.

Something to watch the second half, if the Phillies are intensifying their training regimes, you'd expect a lot of players to struggle the first half as they leave their "comfort zone" but for some to suddenly take off as the light goes on - so keep an eye on jumps in performance and rapid promotions.
