[size=150] PHILLIES SELECT JOSEPH FROM LEHIGH VALLEY [/size]
The Phillies have selected the contract of first baseman Tommy Joseph from triple-A Lehigh Valley, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced today. To make room for Joseph on the 25-man roster, Darin Ruf was optioned to Lehigh Valley.
In 27 games with the IronPigs this season, Joseph is hitting .347 with seven doubles, six home runs and 17 RBI. The 24-year-old currently leads all International League players in batting and OPS (.981) and ranks second in slugging (.611), fifth in extra-base hits (13) and total bases (58), tied for fifth in home runs and tied for ninth in RBI. He has hit safely in 20 of his last 24 starts (.367, 33-90) for Lehigh Valley.
Originally selected as a catcher by the San Francisco Giants in the second round of the June 2009 draft, Joseph was acquired by the Phillies in the Hunter Pence trade in July 2012. He was named a Top 10 prospect in his respective organizations by Baseball America three times (2010-12) and played for the U.S. Team at the All-Star Futures Game in 2012. Over 500 minor league games, the Phoenix, Ariz., native is batting .255 with 107 doubles, four triples, 69 home runs and 292 RBI.
