PHILLIES PLACE RUIZ ON DISABLED LIST
Prior to tonight’s game, the Phillies placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 7-day disabled list with concussion-like symptoms, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, catcher Koyie Hill had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Ruiz is batting .257 with 15 doubles, two home runs, 14 RBI and a team-best .363 on-base percentage this season. Ruiz was hit in the head by a pitch in the 11th inning of last night’s 5-3 walk-off win against the Marlins.
Hill, 35, was batting .240 with nine doubles, a triple, three home runs and 17 RBI in 45 games for Lehigh Valley this season. Acquired from the Washington Nationals on February 17, Hill has thrown out 13 of 26 potential base stealers this season. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2000 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Hill appeared in 18 games last season for the Miami Marlins.
To accommodate Hill’s addition to the 40-man roster, outfielder Zach Collier was designated for assignment.
Collier, 23, has appeared in 40 games for double-A Reading this season, batting .228 with five doubles, two triples and a home run. A non-roster invitee to major league spring training this year, Collier was originally selected by the Phillies between the first and second rounds of the 2008 draft (34th overall).
