PHILLIES SIGN JHAILYN ORTIZ
The Phillies have signed 16-year-old right fielder Jhailyn Ortiz to a minor league contract, Benny Looper, Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel announced tonight.
Ortiz, 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, was ranked by MLB.com as the sixth-best overall prospect in this year’s international free agent class. Baseball America rated Ortiz’s raw power the best in the class, currently grading his power tool a 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale.
“We have been scouting Jhailyn since he was 14 years old,” said Looper. “Since that time, our scouts have gotten to know the family and have a strong conviction of not only his ability to play baseball, but his strong character and desire to be a Major League player. We are excited to add the power potential Jhailyn possesses to the Phillies Organization.”
A native of Costanza, Dominican Republic, Ortiz was signed by Sal Agostinelli, Director of International Scouting for the Phillies.
The Phillies signed three other additional International products, including Venezuelan catcher Rafael Marchan, and infielder Kuedy Bocio and left-handed pitcher Manuel Silva, both natives of the Dominican Republic.
