You would think at some point teams would start to say "I am not going to help you get the guy you want for a bucket of beans, give me something a little more substantial".

It is almost like teams have "friends" they know will help when they need it.

Royals were under the penalty and also started with the maximum $5.75 million pool. Can't fault them for getting something for their pool money. I am guessing this kid has decent velocity and that is about it as it took him till his 3rd season to get out of the DSL.

Things will start to change when teams come off penalty status. The price will then go up for acquiring allocations. There were 10 teams this year. Only 6 next year and then zero in 2019 under penalty.

BA has the Phils linked to VZ shortstop Alexeis Azuaje. 5-10, 160, R-R - ran the fastest 60-yard dash at the showcase but also struck out in 4 of 7 ABs. He looks a lot better running than he does hitting.

Rangers set to sign Julio Pablo Martinez for the remaining $2.8 million in their pool. Side note for the Phillies is that we probably have some extra pool space available though it is hard to know how much. This takes the Rangers out of the competition for anyone left. I had always hoped they tried to get the Korean SS Bae whose deal with the Braves was voided. He had signed for $300K but I don't think he was on the list of restricted players that had to be signed by January.

Per the mlb.com transactions pages, the Phils signed Mexican RHP Manuel Urias on Wednesday. Urias turned 17 yesterday. 6'6", 200 lbs.

No mention of bonus, so no idea if it was significant though a projectible pitcher already throwing 90 when he is 16 does not sound bad on the surface.

Article said he's 6-foot-5 tall and weighs-in at 225 pounds and is just turning 17.
Since he was signed off a showcase with 25 ML scouts, you have to figure there was a real bonus involved.

Signings out of Mexico are tricky because the mlb team is paying the club in Mexico, and the player gets a portion of that as his bonus.

Usually the Mexican team gets something like 80% of the bonus. Big reason why it was probably not a huge bonus is the kid signing at 17 rather than last July when he would have been eligible.

He was already playing for some Mexican teams now so he could have still signed at 16 and stayed in school if that was where he was. All speculation of course. This feels more like a $100K-$200K signing than anything much more. That being said, give me a half dozen low cost 6"5" pitchers that already throw 90 every year and we'll eventually surface some real prospects. There is just no indication it was a large bonus because that would have made it into the story.
