Phuturephillies reports that the Phillies signed RHP Jhongel Malaver to a minor league contract on January 31st, and assigned him to the GCL West roster. Malaver is an 18-year-old Venezuelan, currently pitching in late relief in the Venezuelan Winter League of Prospects.

Gary Jones will reprise his role as manager at triple-A Lehigh Valley, while Shawn Williams will take over as manager at double-A Reading. Marty Malloy will manage high-A Clearwater, and newcomer Mike Micucci will manage low-A Lakewood after spending last season in the Seattle Mariners’ organization. Pat Borders and Roly DeArmas will return to manage short-season Williamsport and the rookie-level Gulf Coast League East team, respectively. Milver Reyes will manage the Gulf Coast League West club. Waner Santana and Orlando Munoz will lead the rookie-level Dominican Summer League teams.

No, not formal "transactions." Hiring employees apparently doesn't count as "transactions" unless we're talking about contracts that can be treated as property. Field staff contracts don't allow for "trades" to other organizations; apparently, MLB sees field staff as human employees, not as chattel property.

No, no. No need to do that! It doesn't hurt to report the list of field staff hires here. I was just reacting to the fact that MLB doesn't treat these hires as transactions - they only apply that term to player contract activities... likely because of the history of MLB, where player contracts (and effectively, players themselves) have always been treated as property - subject to depreciation, able to be sold and traded, etc. Other personnel have not - there has never been a reserve clause that bound a third-base coach to a particular club in perpetuity, etc.

Phils signed a 22-year-old UDFA 2B, Johnny Weeks, earlier this week, and assigned him to Willamsport. Weeks is a smallish (5'10") right-hander out of the University of Hawaii. Know nothing else at all about him.
