[size=150] PHILLIES SIGN BILLINGSLEY [/size]
The Phillies have signed right-hander Chad Billingsley to a one-year, $1.5 million contract, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. The contract includes performance bonuses.
Billingsley, 30, spent all of last season on the disabled list for the Los Angeles Dodgers while he recovered from both Tommy John surgery on his right elbow (4/24/13) and surgery to repair his right flexor tendon (6/24/14). Both surgeries were performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Over a six-year span from 2007 through 2012, Billingsley averaged over 12 wins and nearly 180.0 innings per season. In 37 career games (33 starts) against National League East Division teams, he has gone 14-6 with a 2.84 ERA and has held those teams to a .220 batting average.
“As has been the case throughout this offseason, we have attempted to create as much starting pitching depth as possible at both the major and minor league levels,” said Amaro. “Given Chad’s track record, we feel he is an excellent candidate to bounce back as a productive starting pitcher.”
For his career, Billingsley is 81-61 with a 3.65 ERA in 219 games (190 starts), all for the Dodgers, who selected him in the first round (24th overall) in the 2003 draft. He was selected to the 2009 NL All-Star team and has pitched in six postseason games for the Dodgers, three of them coming against the Phillies.
To make room for Billingsley on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated left-hander Cesar Jimenez for assignment. Billingsley will wear #38.
