The Garcia thing was always a bit mysterious, but I don't think the teams ever get to decide here. MLB voids the contract if they believe the player wronged the team (and it is suggested the kid won't be allowed to sign with another team or play professionally for one year). Or they punish the team if they are in on it (as was the case with the Red Sox class that got us Muzziotti, or the Atlanta stuff that got their GM fired).
In any case, this is quite a bit more extreme than the one-year discrepancy with Garcia - a 19 year-old purporting to be 14 who would be older than Andrew Painter is now by the time he actually signed his contract in 2027. And he was using a fake name/false identity, which you would think could also have some legal ramifications (but that also depends on jurisdiction).
But how was the verbal agreement even legal?
