How many years until the Padres Trade Machado?

OK, I admit I think it is a forgone conclusion that the Padres will eventually be forced to trade Machado when they dont suddenly become financially able to handle this contract.

Padres have a good, deep farm system. The Diamondbacks and Giants are in long rebuilds. The Rockies may be in one soon as well. Padres are in good shape. More likely, the real question is will he use his opt out to fulfill his dream of playing for the Yankees eventually?

A better question I saw someone post in the comments on MLBTR is "How soon before the White Sox trade Alonso and Jay?"

I think this speaks more to the fact that mid and low budget MLB teams are not as broke as you think they are.

But given the opt-out, 4-5 years is probably the best answer. If it's July of Year 5 and they're not contending and he's still thriving, they'll either have to re-do the deal or trade him. But if they're headed for the World Series or confident he wants to stay (like the Dodgers were with Kershaw this past year), they'll wait it out.

I agree it's laughable, just more Boras/Heyman nonsense. But we don't really know what kind of payroll they can carry. Jumping from 110 to 140 is still having a low payroll. And if you can field a lineup that's 3/4 homegrown young players they cost nothing

Yep this has been my fear for some time. Another team coming out of nowhere and doing what we all thought the Phillies would do. Sign Both. At this point if that happens the Phillies are not going to be in a good place with the fans in this town. Whether its the right move or not

The contract is believed to have first opt out at 5 years. I don't think he opts out at that point. I don't see his numbers being all that great in that ballpark, and he'd be 31.

It's hard to say until we see how the future CBA and free agent market goes. As things currently stand now, for sure, why would anyone want to be a 31 year-old FA? Another reason why Boras is probably pushing for 2 or 3 years (and some frontloading to boot). Not only will Harper still be young but they can react to the new CBA.

You never know where Machado's head will be at in five years, assuming he is indeed still on the Padres at that point. If he's still putting up great numbers he could use the threat of opting out to renegotiate, or, a la A-Rod, to get traded back East. If not to the Yankees than the Marlins.
