I'm not sure Eshelman is destined for anything more than 5th starter on the worst team in baseball and he has a 9.90 ERA this spring/summer. But yes: rooting for him a little.

With his hair down Bryce has actually turned into Jayson Werth.

Somebody needs to remind McCarthy and Davis (and Murphy) that there's a ballgame they're supposed to be announcing. Pathetic yukking it up, completely failed to note an outstanding DP started by Didi (they mentioned it AFTER the inning ended). Clowns.

haha. He was actually not even supposed to start today, their announced Opening Day starter is now hurt.

The announcers really are brutal. They started talking about how incredible it was that Brogdon played for Lewis-Clark in Idaho, and that great scouts can find good talent anywhere, and then (presumably after producer said something or they looked it up themselves) they're like, "he was one of 7 Lewis-Clark players drafted that year." It is an extremely well-known, if still modest, program.

Looks like the final is 5-1 in 9 and a half innings. Phillies do not bat in the tenth.

Guess they wanted to get an inning in for Kelley on the mound.

Now I see on Phillies.com, a box score for the game on Sunday, July 19, 2020, where the Phillies win 3-2.

I don't think that is what I saw earlier, but who knows what is going on with these games. I saw the Orioles score in the top of the tenth to take a 5-1 lead and then the Phillies did not bat in the bottom of the tenth. Earlier box score listed the game as Orioles winning 4-1 in nine innings.

This link likely will change to the correct score sometime soon, but right now, is is Phillies 3, Orioles 2,

Yeah that's just some kind of glitch. Even if it's possible something in the game didn't count (because of extra outs) the Phillies did not score more than 1 run. That box you've linked to currently shows HRs by Knapp and Mahtook.

The game story has it 5-1.

Brookover has it 4-1 which is probably correct (since the 5th run was in the 10th).

I watched the last few innings and it was 4-1 after 9 innings, game won by Baltimore.

They played an additional top of the tenth and Baltimore scored another run but that didn't show up in the box score I saw several hours ago. Then I was looking around the internet and saw the box score with Phillies winning 3-2. I cannot understand how they could get this so wrong on line at an official MLB website. Well, maybe kI should not be all that surprised. I expect that tomorrow, this will be corrected. Even though they show the score with the Phillies winning, they list the W and L pitchers correctly with Wheeler getting the L.

I expect things will be better when the season starts, but with reduced staff everywhere, I do expect more mistakes will be made.

That extra half inning was bizarre, to say the least. They don't even do stuff like that in ST. How would they have scored things if the Phillies batted in the bottom of the tenth and had a four run inning?

As for the game, yeah, Brookover had it right when he called it lifeless.

What makes this game more lifeless than the Saturday's game vs the Nats? Did the players yell less? Did they not hustle as much such as down the line or into out of the dugout? It seems the only time we hear this term is when the offense didn't do much in the game. Does that really mean they put less effort into the effort?

The stuff we have seen in the two games is what I have seen in the past at the complex in the games between minor league teams, but never in the ML games in the main stadium in Clearwater. Of course, they aren't charging admission for these three games, so they can do whatever the managers agree to do. Must unusual for me was Nola pitching to an extra batter in the two 1-2-3-4 innings in DC. Looks like his pitch count was so low, he needed to throw some extra pitches in those innings so that he would only go five, and give some work to the bullpen pitchers slated to work later in the game.

I think the two 3-run homers made the DC game seem more exciting than the game against the O's.

I think there are other ways to quantify lifeless that don't necessarily equal lack of effort. Swinging at a lot of bad pitches. Looking at good pitches. Bad contact. Guys like Eshelman, when they are having a good game, tend to make it look that way too.

Given everything else we've been through I don't find it especially weird or surprising that they are doing whatever they can to get work in. It's surprising they haven't played more games but obviously they want to limit travel and two-team interaction until it counts. The first spring training doesn't even count at this point, we are about to see real games being played that will be the equivalent of March 15 in terms of practice time. I saw one GM say whichever team has the least COVID cases is going to win the World Series but I also think whichever teams are sharpest in the first 10 games will probably make the playoffs. Or maybe everyone will go 5-5.

At least, Phillies.com has corrected the results for this game and now shows a Baltimore win, 4-1. Clearly the tenth inning never happened.

I imagine that since the Phillies had 10 batters that counted, the extra outs also counted. In the Baltimore game the Phillies did not bat in the 10th, so indeed, it's like that inning never happened.
