He’s going to start Realmuto and Harper tomorrow in Washington. Might as well get them off their feet now since this one’s in the loss column.

I certainly understand why he is giving them a few innings off. I wonder why he doesn't give Hoskins a brief break as well. I know he didn't come up last inning but I'd have run Morrison out to first even if he didn't get to pinch hit for Hoskins in the top of the 8th.

Question now is do the Phillies step up and win the series in Washington, or do they fold and finish the season on a down swing. Eight games to go. I'd say winning 5 would be a good ending. Splitting 4-4 would be continuing the mediocrity.

Have you seen their road record? 2-3 in DC and 2-1 against Miami would be success. We can't even knock the Nats out any more but we can make them travel maybe.

The road record is 36-40, dropping another game below .500 with losing the series in Cleveland. While it has been a losing record since very early in the season, it is not all that much off a mediocre .500 for the year. Doing much better at home has kept them a little above .500 overall for the season. They only need to win 3 of the final 8 (5 on the road in Washington and 3 at home with the Marlins) to end this season with a winning record, the first in several years. For me, winning only 3 of the final 8 would be a disappointment for me even though they would have improved marginally over last season. I hope they can win at least 5 of these 8 remaining games, but winning 4 or the 8 would continue their trend of winning about half the games over the past few weeks, which really is mediocre performance.

I will say that the final game in Cleveland was very disappointing. Of course, such games happen periodically to every team over the season. How they play in Washington is important. I hope they can show some positives over the final week of the 2019 season and go into the off season on an upbeat positive note.

Though I hope we never see Morin, Parker or Hughes in Phillies uniforms again after this coming Sunday, I think they should invite Vincent to camp on a minor league deal next spring. Most people only remember those back-to-back walkoff losses but, other than that, he has done quite well here, albeit in a SSS. His career stats are not chopped liver, either.

Morin and Hughes should both be back, since they're already controlled. Would rather see which one of them (and sure, Vincent too) might have a good next season in him then sign more Hunters and Nesheks (or Robertsons. Or Kimbrels). We don't have a ton of young options either.

I know it's perception but it seems like every time we cut a David Hernandez or Chad Qualls loose, they're pitching well somewhere else the next year. In someone like Morin's case he automatically becomes better once he is the 7th option instead of the third option.

See also Mike Timlin, Todd Jones, Roberto Hernandez (the reliever, not the starter f/k/a Fausto Carmona) and, especially, Arthur Rhodes The difference between all of them and Morin and Hughes is that they had longer, more extensive track records of success before they were Phillies. At the same time, I am sure some fans of other teams shook their heads at the 2008 Phillies' bullpen with other teams' castoffs (Lidge to some extent, Durbin, Condrey, Romero and Eyre). That's the nature of the beast with relievers. They can be great one year, awful the next. That's why you're playing with fire when you sign them to a multiyear contract and/or a lot of money.

Hughes has an excellent track record. Two sub-.2.00 ERA seasons, including 2018. Career ERA of 2.89 even including this year. Better career numbers than Neris, arguably. Along with Neris, still has one of the lowest WHIPs on the team this year (though Parker's is even lower). And an awful FIP because he has a home run problem (even more than Hector). But he's supposed to be a ground ball pitcher.

If you think that can't be fixed or believe he's in physical decline at 33, sure, move on. But anyone without an uncuttable salary is welcome in my book.

Morin is closer to a Condrey - who was always the last guy in the pen - than a Durbin but unless tendering him comes at the expense of someone better (Austin Davis? Eickhoff?) he's still a body.
